Roberts’ final season promises to be most difficult
Mike Roberts isn’t answering
his phone these days.
The UNC baseball coach
is in his Boshamer Stadium office,
readying for his last spring at the helm.
But he won’t talk about why he’s coming
back for a 21st year, back to a job that
has become a tremendous chore.
“He really doesn’t have anything
more to say,” someone at the baseball
office said. “He’s said all he wants in the
(press) releases.”
Earlier this week Roberts, 47, issued
a press release that he had resigned
effective after the 1998 season, citing
“personal reasons.”
He said last season was “difficult,” a
gross understatement. In 19 years as
coach, Roberts’ teams never had a losing
season. In his 20th, UNC went 29-31
and 6-18 in the ACC dead last. His
players essentially laid down over the
final 12 games, winning just two.
This offseason only perpetuated the
disaster. Three pitchers left the team,
with one quitting and two transferring.
Hurricanes sign 2 more
as preseason camp nears

The Carolina Hurricanes signed forwards Steve Martins
and Ethan Philpott to contracts Thursday.
Martins, 25, had one assist in the two games he played with
the Hurricanes last season. He scored 43 points and had 78
penalty minutes in 63 games with the Springfield Falcons of
the American Hockey League. He was selected by the
Hurricanes as the fifth overall pick in the 1994 Supplemental
Draft.
Philpott, 22, had 12 points in 25 games at Harvard
University last season. He was originally drafted 64th overall
by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft.
Terms of the contracts were not released.
The Hurricanes also announced right wing Brent Fedyk
accepted a free agent try-out.
Fedyk, 30, scored three points in nine games with the
Michigan K-Wings of the International Hockey League last
season. He spent four seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers
where he scored more than 20 goals in the 1992-93 and 1993-
94 seasons. He was traded to the Dallas Stars in 1995.
Carolina will open its first training camp in North Carolina
Sept. 10 at the Greensboro Coliseum.

are rumored not to be pleased he’s stay
ing. They want a change. They expected
one. Like their coach, they’ve grown
weary.
When asked to confirm this senti
ment, no players would (media training
is a very powerful thing) But no one
would deny it, either.
“No one really has much to say on
it,” said one player, chuckling at his own
discomfort. “It’s a tough situation .... I
don’t think anyone wants to comment.”
There will be redshirts. Say you’re a
talented senior on the roster who does
n’t agree with Roberts’ philosophy, his
style or his personality. Are you more
likely to redshirt or play in conflict?
It doesn’t end there. Potential recruits
will spurn UNC, a program... -oaching
limbo, for teams that have stability.
