Please call Ali at 918-7209 Sankey's Scrambling Kills Tar Heels By Bret Strelow Assistant Sports Editor Going into Saturday’s game against Wake Forest, North Carolina’s defense had one major goal: stop Demon Deacon running back Morgan Kane. But somewhere in the mix, they for got about Wake quarterback Ben Sankey. The UNC defense accomplished its primary task, limiting Kane to 71 yards on 28 carries. “We wanted to stop somebody because we haven’t stopped nobody the whole year,” North Carolina defensive end Julius Peppers said. While Peppers and the rest of the defensive unit stopped Kane, they did n’t fare as well against Sankey. Negating the 29 yards Sankey lost on five UNC sacks, he rushed 15 times for 78 yards. “There was no question, they weren’t going to let (Kane) beat us,” Wake Forest coach Jim Caldwell said. “They took him away. Option plays, that’s why Ben Sankey had so many runs when he was kind of ducking up underneath, pri marily because they were taking an end and running him upfield to the pitch. “They weren’t going to let Morgan get that pitch consistently.” On Wake Forest’s fourth series, an eight play, 80-yard drive, Sankey nished 22 yards down the right side on a third-and-seven play to give the Deacs the ball at the UNC 28-yard line. Two plays later, he scampered 19 yards on second-and-six to give the Deacons first and-goal at the 5. On second-and-goal, Sankey avoid ed UNC safety David Bomar’s rush, scrambled to his right and found Demon Deacon fullback Rhamen Love- Lane for a 5-yard touchdown. “We had some great blocks down field, and I was just trying to lead off some blocks,” Sankey said. “They had a real good defensive scheme for us. They were making me run the ball, which I had to try to make a couple of good first downs. That’s what a quarterback has to do sometimes, make a couple of plays.” Sankey’s made more than his fair share of plays. His scrambling ability also enabled him to complete 15-of-23 ~ ne of the notion's feeding continuing care i wMZSJ w retirement communities. Modem facilities. Excellent benefits. Call 493-5969 DTH/JEFF POULAND Even though North Carolina was able to hold Wake Forest's Morgan Kane to 71 yards on 28 carries, the Tar Heels were still burned by Demon Deacon quarterback Ben Sankey, who rushed for 49 yards. passes for 132 yards. With the Demon Deacons leading 10-3 in the third quarter and facing a third-and-four, Sankey fought off North Carolina defensive end Joey Evans and delivered a short pass to Kane, who danced for 15 yards and a first down. On the next drive, a march that would last 15 plays and 62 yards while taking 7:28 off the clock, Sankey avoid ed two rushers and on a first-and-10 play from the Wake 45, rolled left, and found Deacon receiver William Merritt for 24 yards. “I liked him because he kept coming back, he didn’t ever quit,” Peppers said. “Those are the type of players I like.” Players Continue to Support Torbush After dropping to 1-8 with the loss to the Demon Deacons, UNC’s players were once again queried repeatedly about coach Carl Torbush’s future and the job he has done this season. And, once again, the players opted to shoulder the blame themselves. “Coach Torbush asks us to do a job, and if we don’t get that job done, it’s not his fault, it’s our fault for not getting it done,” UNC fullback Deon Dyer said. He can’t go out there and play. All he can do is put the best people out there to do what’s asked. I don’t feel like much of this is his fault at all.” Torbush has been under fire from fans and media as UNC continues to languish in the ACC cellar, losing week after week.
