“Both (pitchers) are doing a good job,
and the catchers are doing a good job
working with them,” coach Donna Papa

“I was very comfortable out there,”
McHugh said. “The first couple innings
were shaky, but then I found out that
they couldn’t hit my fastball.”
When needed, the defense bailed her
out of trouble.
In the top of the fourth, shortstop
Michelle Semmes dived deep into the
hole to snare a Mary Susan Hilliard
liner. After a walk, Chrissy Bennett lined
a ball between first and second that was
grabbed by second baseman Crystal
Henderson. She then doubled-off
Maggie Johnson at first.

said. “They’re doing their job really well
and backing me up really good.”
The Tar Heels plugged away with sin
gles, sacrifices and good baserunning to
provide the bulk of their offense.
“Every time we go out on the field,
we try to do the little things and exe
cute,” Henderson said. “We make sure
that we manufacture runs, doing what
ever it takes to get the runs in.”
With UNC leading 1-0 in the third,
Rosie Gustavson led off with a single up
the middle off Seahawk starter Christine
Freaney. After Henderson sacrificed her to
second, she scored on ajen Klesaris single.
Later in the inning, with Klesaris on
third and Semmes on first, the Tar Heels
executed a delayed double steal to pro
duce their third run. From there, UNC
and McHugh cruised to the victory.
The second game, besides the match
ing score, was much like the first. Quinn
Porter reached on a two-out bunt single
toward pitcher Mandi Westbury in the
first inning. After a wild pitch, Gustavson
singled over short to bring home Porter.
In the fourth, Gustavson laid down a
perfect squeeze bunt on a high and tight
pitch, bringing in Carrie Bates.
“I thought the ball was going to hit
me,” Gustavson said. “I was just defend-
