Staff Report North Carolina captured first-place honors in six weight classes at the Vertical Net Open on Saturday at Carmichael Auditorium. iTwo UNC wresders earned second place finishes. -Chuckie Connor, Brad Byers, JqhnMark Bendey, Chris DiGuiseppe, Cprey Bell and Matt Kenny each won individual tides in their respective weight classes. Jake Reynolds and Clint Osbom were both runners-up for the Tar Heels. Connor won his first three matches by fall, the quickest being in 39 seconds, before defeating Chris Rodrigues 1-0 in the final of the 125-pound division. Byers won his first three matches 18-4, 16-3 and 19-7 before winning the 133-pound class by a score of 12-8 against Nate Thoresen of Pensacola Christian College. Bendey had two wins by fall on his way to the 149-pound final before defeating The Citadel’s Wayne Watts MEN S SOCCER From Page 12 else is scoring goals, that’s fine. I was definitely hungry to get another goal.” . The Tar Heels got one 1:19 later off the foot of senior forward Caleb Norkus. But UNC’s two-goal cushion didn’t last long. -Less than 10 minutes after Norkus’ goal, Rhode Island forward Nicholas McCreath stole the ball from Danny Jackson and outraced David Stokes to die front of the net McCreath lobbed in a shot over the head of UNC keeper Michael Ueltschey. “As long as it stayed 2-1, we felt con fident,” Rams coach Ed Bradley said. “If it was 2-1 near the end, we would have tied it up, I think.” ; UNC reserve forward Ryan Kneipper made sure that wasn’t an option. One minute, 50 seconds after Rhode Island’s goal, he scored off a pass from Sean McGinty to restore the Tar Heels’ lead to two goals. - Rhode Island (17-6-1) had scored 11 seconds after Kneipper and Michael Cell entered the game for Cairieri and Norkus. DiGuiseppe followed that up with a 3-1 decision over Mike Cox of Campbell in the 157-pound final. DiGuiseppe reached the final by win ning his first three matches by scores of 17-2,3-2 and 5-2. Corey Bell was strong for UNC at 174 pounds, defeating Princeton’s Greg Parker 4-2 in the final. In the heavyweight class, Kenny wrapped things up for the Tar Heels by defeating Binghamton-SUNY’s Dmitry Lisenenkov by fall in 1:44. It was Carrieri jumped off the UNC bench after the Rhode Island goal and stood by him self with his hands on his hips. Carrieri wanted to get back in the game immediately and end the Rams’ comeback hopes. Kneipper, who has scored two of his four goals in the NCAA tournament, went ahead and did it for him. “Kneipper put the ball in and that definitely took the load off my chest,” Carrieri said. “I was getting a little antsy hoping they weren’t going to get the momentum.” The Tar Heels’ next opponent will be Indiana (15-6), which has won the last two NCAA championships. The winner will advance to the final four in Charlotte. UNC, which set a school record for wins in a season, will ride a 15-match winning streak into the quarterfinal matchup at Fetzer Field this weekend. “I think when we’re 40, it will be nice to look back on,” UNC senior Michael Bucy said. “I think the team is focused on getting to the final four and making the most of the season. “Keep riding the wave.” P What LSAT course did students at the top 25 law schools take? Sharp, who scored 13 points, didn’t attempt one in the second half. “They picked up their intensity,” said UNC point guard Coretta Brown, who finished with 14 points. “They put a lot of pressure on the ball, and they did a good job.” Meanwhile Lady Monarch guard Sharron Francis exploded to start the second half. Francis, O-for-2 in the first half, rai ded off 13 points in the first 8:11 of the second stanza to help catapult ODU to a comfortable lead. Leading scorer Hamchetou Maiga, who continually found holes in UNC’s trapping defense, chipped in a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds for the game. “We mentally let some things that happened out there bother us,” Hatchell said. “Instead of turning those things into positives, we let them wear on us a little more and break us down more.” Dome of Doom? The Tar Heels shot 37 percent from the field in their first game at the Smith Center since a damaged Carmichael floor caused them to play there in 1998. When asked if there’s a difference playing in the Smith Center, Barksdale said, “None whatsoever. We did all the same things. I guess pretty much we had to adjust to the depth, but that’s about it” The Tar Heels are 10-7 in the dome but claim a 271-78 mark in Carmichael. Weaver expected the matter to be resolved by die middle of the week, before the big recruiting weekend next weekend. “One way or another, things have to go forward,” Weaver said. Beamer repeatedly has told reporters that he has no desire to leave Virginia Tech (9-1) but has not said for sure that he is staying. He said Saturday that he planned to talk to reporters about his future, but declined to say when. Officials at Virginia Tech said a com pensation package of more than $ 1 mil lion annually would put Beamer among football’s coaching elite. “There are about 12 to 15 coaches in the country that make in excess of $1 million. It’s what I like to call the Millionaire’s Club,” Weaver said. “We think Frank Beamer needs to be in that club." The deal Virginia Tech will offer Beamer includes salary increases for his assistant coaches. Weaver said the salaries of the Holties’ coaching staff cur rently rank 21st nationally. The new pro posal would place them eighth, he said. University officials also said they will seek approval of an $82.8 million expansion of Lane Stadium from the state General Assembly.
