6 BREAKDOWN I k j* 4S D. Mapp SCOUTING REPORT Freshman back to lead Wake offense BY KRISTIN PRATT ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR It seems like the youth on the Wake Forest offense has had no problem overcoming age or treachery from opposing defenses. Redshirt freshman Kevin Harris, a 6-1, 230-pound running back from Florida, leads the Demon Deacons in rushing. When No. 24 Wake Forest arrives in Chapel Hill on Saturday, fans and the ESPNU nation will see Harris attempt to add to his strong numbers and the North Carolina defense look to combat its failings to stop him. Wake Forest (6-1) has not lost on the road yet this season. While the Tar Heels are coming off a mid-week loss to Virginia, the Demon Deacons are coming to town with a bye-week’s rest under their belt That spot of R & R will help Harris and the rest of the Wake Forest offense have the strength and vivacity to test the UNC defense. While the Wake Forest media guide dubbed Harris the team comedian, his numbers are no laughing matter. Harris chalked up 313 yards in seven games this season, part of the reason Wake Forest is fourth in the conference in rushing. He is averaging 5.1 yards per rush and has four touchdowns to his credit KEVIN HARRIS HEIGHT: 6V WEIGHT: 230 RS FRESHMAN RUNNING BACK that’s half the nurtiber of rushing touchdowns that the entire UNC team has mustered. The nagging injuries that afflicted Harris this spring seem to be gone. That’s harder to say about the UNC defense, in light of the season-end ing injury to senior linebacker Larry Edwards. Harris’ stats are bad news for the Tar Heels, who already have given up 1,247 yards rushing and 2,352 total offensive yards in seven games this season. The defense has allowed 24 rushing touchdowns. Those stats are good enough to place UNC in last place in the con ference in total defense and rushing defense. Harris has shown his ability to stand up and run through even strong opposing teams this season. He gained 50 yards against Clemson earlier this season. Clemson is ranked No. 1 in the con ference for total defense and No. 2 in rushing defense, only giving up 576 yards rushing. Against N.C. State in the team’s last game Oct. 14, Harris opened the game with a 65-yard run and a touchdown on Wake Forest’s first possession. Not a bad way to make your first college career start. But do not forget the other force in Wake Forest’s offense. Harris is second in total offense behind fellow redshirt freshman Riley Skinner. The young quarterback ended the spring session as the No. 3 guy behind redshirt junior Benjamin Mauk and redshirt freshman Brett Hodges. But when Mauk broke his arm and dislocated his shoulder in the season opener, Skinner was tapped to be the man in the pocket Mauk had surgery to repair the injury to his shoulder Oct. 12. Skinner will quarterback the Demon Deacons on Kenan Stadium soil Saturday. He’s put up some respect able numbers this season, going 74 for 109 with four touchdowns, one interception and 912 yards. Skinner is first in the ACC in pass efficiency, completion percentage and fewest interceptions. The team as a whole is also second in the conference in passing efficiency, largely due to his contributions. Skinner is a candidate for Rookie of the Year honors. Between the two freshmen, Wake Forest will be a solid threat 10/28/061 DTH SPORTSATURDAY WAKE FOREST MO.
