Reports from Iran’s state news agency called the compact a “vic tory for the ruling party and its Kurdish partners,” referring to the Shiite lawmakers who supported the agreement. Earlier this year, Iran had leaned on Shiite lawmakers to block the deal. Clinton good pick Republicans say (MCT) The consideration of Hillary Clinton for secretary of state drew praise from several Republicans this past weekend. Clinton would be “a very good selection” as secretary of state, the Senate’s second-ranking Republican, Jon Kyi of Arizona, said in an interview with Fox News on Sunday morning. “It seems to me she’s got the experience. She’s got the temperament for it. I think she would be well received around the world,” Kyi said. U.S. Sen. Byron Dorgan, R-N.D., told Fox he didn’t think she would have trouble winning confirmation. games Ut OSES H 8 I 1 71 6I |2 "j " __9 1 2 “9 3 1 _ 5 81 ~ 1 I2 9 3 4 6 1 5 | 61~7~[ I2 | Cost of driving to Charlotte to drop off the couch you sold with a "free” ad on craiglist. Inter-Faith then pays water bilb for low-income families, and the nonprofit is reimbursed by the Taste of Hope fund. Moran said the monthly con tributions add up to help needy families. He said families now have increasing need for help paying bilb because of the economic slump. But Moran said the crunch prob ably won’t prevent people from donating. “Whatever it takes to round up to a dollar will not be missed, the Kyoto Protocol between 2008 and 2012. Although donating is cheap, the program receives little public par ticipation. Greg Feller, director of public affairs for OWASA, said about 1,100 of the about 22,000 households served by the water provider donate to the Taste of Hope program. Last year, the program received about $6,900 in donations from OWASA users. Feller said this was a higher amount than was generated in pre vious years, an increase he attributes Demand exceeds number of inauguration tickets Attributed to popularity of Obama BY CHRIS KENNEDY STAFF WRITER In the two weeks since President elect Barack Obama’s victory, the demand for tickets to his inaugu ration has already far exceeded the number available. Phil Feagan, a spokesman for U.S. Rep. David Price, D-N.C., said the increased demand for tickets reflects Obama’s popularity in the 4th Congressional District and across the state. “It’s safe to assume that our area was not as excited about George W. Bush,” he said. Almost 10,000 requests from Price’s constituents in Wake, Durham, Orange and Chatham counties have flooded Price’s office since Nov. 4, Feagan said. The number of requests far sur passes the number of tickets the Price office expects to receive probably less than 200, he said. “I know inaugurations are always popular, but demand for this one is very large,” said Taylor Stanford, press secretary for U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick, R-N.C. Myrick represents Mecklenburg County and some of the surround ing counties. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2008 to better publicity. The Inter-Faith Council and OWASA hope speak ing before government leaders will garner even more attention. Moran said the program serves about 200 families each year, and he hopes to double that number. “I think almost everybody would participate if they knew it cost such a small amount,” Alderman Lydia Lavelle said. The Chapel Hill Town Council passed a resolution last month sup porting the program. The Inter-Faith Council also inauguration. “I’ve been calling UNC alumni in Congress, and my friends have been calling their congressmen," she said. “The problem is no one has tick ets.” U.S. representatives and sena tors from every state receive tickets to the event to distribute to their constituents. The tickets, which are free to public, have not been distributed to congressmen yet, and no one is sure exactly how many tickets each office will receive. Aaron Groen, a spokesman for Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., said the historically Republican district in northwestern North Carolina has received considerably fewer requests than others— about 500 —but still more than the office can provide. Each congressional office decides for itself how to distribute tickets to its constituents. “We have collected requests in the order that they were received, so we are planning on distributing them in a first-come, first-served method,” said Kathleen Joyce, press secretary for Rep. Walter Jones, R-N.C. Other offices are waiting to find out the final number they will receive before deciding on a distribution method. The problem is no one has tickets ” LILY ROBERTS, first year For those who aren’t lucky enough to get a ticket, there will be events surrounding the inaugura tion that don’t require one, Joyce said. The ceremony might be screened on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and there will be a public parade on Pennsylvania Avenue, where the White House is located. “I’m not very optimistic about getting tickets, but I’m happy to go to Washington, D.C., and watch Obama on TV,” Roberts said. Some have more direct chan nels to inauguration and are more optimistic. Sophomore Sandra Davidson said she’ll go to Washington, D.C., to be there when Obama is sworn in even if she doesn’t get tickets. “It’s going to be a historical event and there are going to be a lot of people there to watch history in the making,” she said.
