BOOK EDITOR'S DEPARTMENT. Ceremonies of Modern Judaism. By ir.RN J upaism. iy llerman Baer. With an Introduction ! by Thos. O. Summers, D. D. Nashville : Stevenson & Evans ISoQ. ISmo-pp. Some portions of this work were pub- lishedinthe New Orleans and Southern Christian Advocates. They were read with great interest, unci me uesirc ,vas exprebs-, cd th"t they should be developed into a ; volume 1'his lui3 bceu done in a very satisfactory manner. The value of the work is increased bv several elegant and truthful pictorial illustrations. The author j is a Jew a Hebrew of the Hebrews vet I a sincere believer in Christ. As an edu cated Israelite, he is familiarly acquainted with the Ceremonies of Modern Judaism ; and as an enlightened Christian, he knows what estimate to place upon them. He can appreciate the peculiar meaning and force of our Lord's denunciations of the hypocritical Scribes and Pharisees for bind ing heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and laying them on men's should er? making broad their phylacteries and enlarging the borders of their garments making long prayers and devouring wid ows' houses paying tithe of mint, and anise, and cummin, and omitting the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercv, and faith and making the Word of God of none effect through their tradi tion which they had delivered. He can also emphasize the inquiry of Peter, "Why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor ws were able to bear ?" It is devout ly hoped that this book on Jewish Cere monies may fall into the hands of some of the author's " brethren after the flesh," that they will give it a candid peru sal, and then compare the system which it unfolds with that of Jesus Christ, of whom Moses wrote and to whom u give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall re- J, to ..r of .'in, s- well u coro j-'j'o-, ar,-l ; will o';.ar.o:j -t'i thorn fro:i both ; ar.I if the Sod h) liiake thoni freo-, they khzll hi U'-.'t iwlwl ' II v yloriij'H MiU-t that liberty ri X ) tho-.e -who have Loeri all th'ir Jiftimt subject t-i noa a bor, i:;;re tli-it of the J'; .5 I The Chri-t.i;:ri re-ii-.r vri',1 r..-ru-e thi work on .-v;A '':r'ii'j': with 'j'ioo'jiiri .'i :r.t;r-f-.-.t.
