Particulars hereafter. Several gentlemen of large meant have been in the city during the past few days, looking around and asking about our resources &c. We hope they are pleased with our pec pie and the surroundings. We 'are told by a well Informed gen tleman from the country, that the melon crop this season, will not be as large as usual. He says that we have too much rain, causing the fruit to rot in many instances before ma turity. We are informed by Deputy Moye of the Superior Court Clerk's office that up to ten o'clock this morning, two hundred and twenty certificates bad been issued to parties, claiming direct taxes. There are estimated to be eighteen hundred in the county. Mr. C. D. Payne, publisher of the Union Signal, Chicago, 111., writes: I never saw anything that would cure headache like your Bradycrotine. JulyW 6t. An unusual dullness prevails at all the departments in the capitol, so far as routine business is concerned. With the exception of callers at the Executive office concerning the direct taxes, an " awful stillness" prevails. Secretary Telfair, however, haB his hands full, but he is keeping up mat ters all the same. s A large crowd of colored excur sionists arrived here this morning from Payettevilje. There were eight coaches loaded t& the utmost capacity, containing altogether about twelve hundred persons. College. There is a general desire; that the Raleigh bicycle club should give an other entertainment, as the rain last Monday night prevented many ladies from attending. The Governors Guard drum corps will doubtless create a sensation at Wrightsville. There is no better or ganization anywhere of the kind, and besides, all are clever fellows. Livery stable keepers, hack owners and others interested should bear in mind to give in their taxes under schedule " B.'' Register Mial is ready to wait on them. No man, woman, or child has a right to keep a dog in the city limits without being subjected to a tax. Persons who fail from any cause to report the same, are liable to the penalties of the law, and they will be inilicted on every occasion. Don't forget this. Attention is called to the new ad vert sement of Messrs J. M. Brough ton & Co., which appears in this issue of the Visitor. These gentlemen are doing a business that is greatly pro motive of the interest of Raleigh and should be liberally patronized and encouraged by our people. I. O. O. F. Season Gales Lodge, No. G4, I. O O. P., will meet tomorrow night in reg ular communication at 8 o'clock sharp. Work in the second degree and other matter of importance to be attended to. This will be a very interesting and important meeting which requires the presence of every member. Candidates for the second degree will report promptly at 8:15 o'clock. A cordial invitation to all Odd Fellows. Thiem, Sec. The Richmond Excursion. Much excitement is being worked up on account of the announcement that an excursion will be run from this city to Richmond, Va., on August 5th. The excitement arises from the fact that a trip to the capital of Vir ginia and return for the small sum of $2.50 is a most unusual event. It is an opportunity for recreation and pleasure not often seen. Now let everybody get ready and go. There are many sights to be seen in the capital of the late Southern Confed eracy which is of interest to every North Carolinian. It is a city of monuments, and the scenes incident to the great struggle are found at every turn. Get ready and go. Getting Beady. A drive out to the exposition grounds these pleasant afternoons, is not out of place. Much can be seen there in the way of preparation for the big show. Progress is visible on all sides. There is much to be done and the officials are taking time by the "fore-lock" and gone to work in earnest. The buildings are to be placed in proper condition; the grand stand is to be renovated and re ar ranged. Floral hall is to be placed in perfect order for the vast and varied entries expected in that line. The fencing needs repair; the stables for cattle are to be looked after and a thousand things not enumerated must engross the attention of Mr. Patrick and his assistants before the "big show" opens. The temporary hotel is in progress, and it will be a great accommodation to the vast crowd expected. There will be about sixty rooms in the building, affording refuge for perhaps several hundred at reasonable rates. There will be no let up in the work of preparation. Bright, fresh eggs 14c retail. Uzzle & Co. have them. A Hess. We were passing by the establish meut of Messrs. W. C. & A. B. Strou- ach, about 1 o'clock this afternoou, when we noticed 'Will' Stronach sit ting in a chair with a 1 -ok of amaze ment on his countenance as he view ed a small squad of the colored ex cureionists from Fayetteville dispose of two or three huge Florida water melons which they hid cut on the sidewalk immediately in front of the store. We asked "Will" what caused him to put on such a look of conster nation. "Why," said he, "you will hardly believe it; but that squad there can beat anything in the way of miscella neous eating I ever saw. Just now they came into the store and bought a can of oysters and soon put them out of sight. They then asked for a can of lobsters which they also hid under their shirts. After this they took a dessert of a large quan tity of cakes and are now attacking with vigor the largest Florida water melons in the store. How they will wind up, I don't know, but I will keep a memorandum for future ref erence." "Will" said that for varied capac ity, the "inner man" of these Cape Fear citizens has never been equalled within his knowledge. A Worthy Object. We alluded briefly in a recent issue to the matter of having ,In Oakwood cemetery a chapel suitable for funer al services, Sic. The object is a good one, and is carried out in most of the cities and towns of any considerable size in the country. R. H. Battle, Esq., the energetic president of the Raleigh Cemetery Association, is urg ing the matter, and we are glad to note that his proposal is meeting with a most favorable response. The as sociation has adopted the following resolution: Resolved, That it is very desirable to have a neat chapel erected near the centre of Oakwood cemetery for the purpose of occasional funerals, and a place of refuge in case of a storm at the time of the burial, &c; tnd that each lot holder be request ed to contribute for this end; and public spirited citizens be appealed to to increase the fund by subscrip tion for said purpose. Mr. Battle says: We owe it to the memory of our be loved dead to make the place where their bodies sleep as attractive as we can. Oakwood cemetery is still and for years to come will continue to be the principal place of resort for those who need the recreation of an after noon walk. Let all good citizens add to its attractiveness by aiding accord ing to their several ability, in the building of this chapel. The direct ors of the association, without the slightestpecuniaryprofit totbemselves or the stockholders, present or pros pective, give of their time and at ten tion to the improvement of the cem etery, and they ask lot owners and others who would evince respect for the dead to c mtribute to the con venience of the living nnd inakp Oak wook an honor to our little lity to help in this praiseworthy undertake ing.
