Folded 1 ands are ever weary, Selfish hearts are never gay; Life for thee hath many duties, Active be then while you my. Scatter blaofnrs in thy pathway; Gentle words and cheering smilea Belter are than gold and silver, Wtt their grief dispelling wiles. As the pleasant sunshi e falleth Ever on the grateful earth, So let sympathy and kindness Gladden every darkened heart Hearts there are oppressed and weaiy; Drop the tear of sympathy; Whisper words of hope and comfort; Give, and thy reward shall be Joy unto thy soul returning, From th sairjd fountain head; Fieely as hou freely givest, Sha'l the grateful light be shed A LIVELY GHOST. Philadelphia Timee. Lakk Charles, La, May 18 A ghost of exceptionally lively and jo cose nature is agitating the viciuity of what is known the old Cross Roadt by its midnight shrieks of laughter and bursts of hilarity. The Gross Roads is a small settlement lying foui miles south of this town, where two old county roads formerly met The people say that every night between 12 o'clock and 1 they are suddenly awakened by a great noise of shout ing and shrieks as of many voices. Then a single voice, apparently a man's, takes up the task of making the night s'eepless. Tho laughter seems that of a person in a great glee or intoxicated, but invariably ends In a loud scream of anger or pain. After this nothing more is heard until tbe same hour on the next night. Every effort has been made by the people to penetrate the m .stery of this occurrence, but up co date no so lutioti has been found. One peculiar ity is that the laughtor seems to be in each house and to be as distinctly heard in one as another. It is appa rently the noise of a person seated on the roof or shouting through the ceil ing. Various surmises are afloat as to the id ntity of the returned spirit, but though addressed by the names of at whom it could possibly be, no response is to be won from it. It is generally believed, however, to be the ghost of a peddler who, in a drunken frolic, was killed by a prominent plan ter for some silly jest. 'This mystery Has been puzzling the peop'e for some thing over a week now.
