New England Magazine. 1 HE ERIE CANAL. Special. New York, July 18. A centennial anniversary occurs today which will pass practically unroticed. In a few of the cities along the route of the Erie canal the one hundredth anniver sary of the construction of canals in this country will be made the occa sion of a banquet or ball by naval so cieties. The real reason for the fail ure to celebrate the event lay in the jealousy of the various cities along the route of the Erie canal aroused by the desperate efforts Buffalo made to secure the celebration. In this city an informal dinner will be given to friend 8 of canal improvement by Orlando B. Potter and ex -Mayor Franklin Edson, both prominent members of the union for the im provement of cinals. The discussion today may result in an effort to se cure a deepening of the canal by two or three feet so as to increase its value as a waterway. Today it is a "un dred years since the canal construe tion began in this state and in this country, and many important im provements have pince been made on the system of canal construction throughout the United States, leav ing the Erie canal a good deal of a relic in the way of artificial water way You lake No Risk In buying Hood's Sarsaparilla, for it is every where recognized as the standard building-up medicine and blood puillier. It has won its way to the front by its own intrinsic merit, and has ths largest sale of any preparation of Its kind. Be sure to get Ilood's. Hood's I'HIk. Patrick McCor- mack was today fined a sovereign by a police magistrate here for damaging the grave of Charles Stewart Parnell, in Glaenevin Cemetery, and for des troying flowers that had been placed on the grave THE VESUVIUS RUNS ASHORE. NbvTork, July 16 - The United States dynamite cruiser Vesuvius rtn aground at Sunken Meadows in the East River early this morning, during a heavy fog. The tug E 8. At wood was dispatched to the scene. The water almost floated the dynamiter by noon, and when the Atwood began to pull on the cable she slid from her muddy bed and was soon in deep water.;: . Another Southern investment and development company has gone out of business. It was a most pretenti ous concern, having among its pub lished list of officials the names of well known business men of the North and Sopth. The "promoter," who is said to have constituted the company and his friends sold out their stock as soon as the public had become inter ested in the enterprise, and now 15,000 stockholders are left .to mourn the loss of their $1,500,000. As long as credulous men shall be found with money to invest the thrifty "promo ter ' will be on hand with his seduc tive schemes. Philadelphia Record.
