"Tell me not In mournful numbers" Advertising doesn't pay, For the man's non oompoa mentis Who would inch absurd thing say, "Life is real! Life is earnestl" And the man who hopes to rise To eminence In any calling Must expect to advertise. "In the world's broad field of battle in the conflict of real life," Advertising is the magnet Of achievements in the strife. Lives of rich men all remind us, "We can make our own sublime." And by liberal advertising To the highest summit climb. "Let us. then, be up and doing," In this sheet your "ad" insert; "Still achieving, still pursuing," Business then will be alert. VACCINATION IN A NEW FIELD M. Haffkine, a learned biologist of the Pasteur Institute, of Paris, de clares that he has discovered a cholera vaccine the efficacy of which he claims to have tested both on guinea pigs and to a certain' degree on human subjects. Mr. flaffkine and four other persons have been inoculated with the virus; and they now consider themselves proof against the scourge The nature of the vims' has not, of course, teen disclosed, but its physio logical effects are thus described: Alter the vaccinaticn a feverish indisposition is felt, with headache anaarynessof the mouth. That re mains a day cr two; but the local yam in me tissues remains a little longer. And, strange enough, the oyuiptoius are use a light attack of influenza. It is not the first time that a connection between cholera and iLfluenza has been noticed. 1 here is nothing essentially irra tlonal or increplble in M. Haffkine's claim. Wiven the efficacy of the vac cinatlon principle against one form of contagion, it would follow philoso. phically that the same principle should prove serviceable against oiner iorms or contagious disease. It was on this theory that Pasteur him self wrought to combat the deadly disease of rabies; and in Germany some of the disclDlea of Konh h O.TA been experimenting to test the value of inoculation with certainelements In cholera cases According to i New Ydrk newspaper, a lady of Ber Hn, the first cholera case in that city. has been cured by this mode of treat ment. n j J) or inese reasons, therefore, the Haffkine researches would seem t.n have been oonducted alone ft nrnmia ing line. But. warned bv the exnnrf ence of Koch's consumption cure, it might be well not to be oversanguine respecting new methods of cholera treatment, however distinguished the source wnence tnev mav emanatA. until their efficacy shall have been so thoroughly demonstrated as to command the respect and confidence oi me meaical world. Ex. Life Is Misery To thousands of people who have the taint of scrofula In their blood. There Is no remedy equal to Hood's Sarsaparilla for scrofula, salt rheum, and every form of blood disease. It Is reasonably sure to benefit all who give it a fair trial. H !' PHU cure Constipation by restor ing the peristaltic action of the alimentary canal.
