Fortress Monroe, Sept. 22 The citizen residing on the government reservation at Fortress Monroe, Va., have been thrown into a state of great excitement, owing to the receipt of a genera' order signed by the Seere tary of War, peremptorily ordering that every house, including the Hy geia and Chamberlain's new hotel, be vacated within fifteen days from the time of is uingof the order, which is dated September 14, 1892, and fur ther oidering the removal and tears ing down of all buildings at the own er'.o expense. The act of Congress, datbd March, 1865, gives the Secreta ry full power in the matter, and the order Is issued, it is understood, be cause of the failure of citizens having residences and hotels on the reserva tion to comply with the request from the Engineer's department that plans and specifications for a proper sew erage In the citizens' quarters at the fort be handed into the department, but this is due to the unsettled con dition of the hotel Chamberlain, which was included in this order. There is from four, .or five million dollars' worth of property on the spot, withgreat interests held by the railroads and other transportation companies, and there Is no doubt strong pressure will be brought to bear upon the Secretary to have him modify his order, which, if carried out, would be very disastrous to the whole vicinity, including Norfolk, Hampton, Newport News, &c.
