r ' ' v.. i i m&tb&t VOL. XXVIII. RALEIGH, MONDAY, JANUARY 23. 189.3. NO. 7G f . CITY IN BRIEF. The merry sleigh belli are it ill beard. 8evral theatrical companies are booked for February. State Treaaarer Tate it at his office again after a week of sickness. It will take a warm rain of some d oration to clean oat the snow. Eggs at 60 cents a dosen looks a little like old confederate times. It is now thought that we will hare no more "xero" Weather daring the present winter. More ooantry wagons made their appearance in market today, and than on any day for the past two weeks. Several of the wells in the western suburbs have gone dry an unusual occurrence at this season of the year. Regular meeting of Wm. G. Hill Lodge, INo. 218, A F & A. M, tonight at 7:30 o'clock. sharp. - Visiting breth ren invited. The Egypt Railway Company has donated ten cords of wood to the poor of Raleigh, and will duplicate the nnmber if desired. Mr. E W Clements, of the N & W R R, son of Rev. W Gr Clements, had the misfortune to get his left shoulder dislocated last Friday. Ad observing gentleman remarked today that there were persons of at least seven different nations doing business on South Wilmington street. The entire plant of tho Wilmington iron county works was destro ed bj fire last Saturday morning. The loss is estimated at . $10,000 insurance $7,500. The shopp will be reconstruct ed at once with improved facilities. Dr. Wm. J. Hawkins exhibited a very praiseworthy public spirit in having the snow cleared off the side walks in front of his entire property on Blount and North streets the next day after it fell, to the great comfort and relief of pedestrians in that di rection. What a difference in the safety and comfort of those compelled to be out would have resulted from a general prevalence of such a spirit. The Kings1 Daughters The noble institution is doing no ble work for the deserving poor of our city and vicinity. The directors of the mission - rooms, however, re quest that the public will not recom mend persons about whom they know nothing. The following announcement is made : - It is the rule of the mission rooms that every case should be personally investigated, but during the exces slvely cold weather Mrs.' Hayes has been compelled to rely in extreme oases upon the reoommendatson of persons whose names should le a guarantee that the families recom mend are worthy and in need. At the last meeting of the board of directors it was found necessary to pass a resolution that colored people should not be assisted from the mis sion rooms. They have all that they can possibly do to keep the white families that are in distress. All the colored reople who have received provisions and wood during the past few days have been helped by the citizeas.not by the King's Daughters The King's Daughters wish to give work; not money. Only in oases of sickness and extreme need is food given We again ask all who wish to help to leave at the mission rooms orders for mending, plain sowing, darning, scouring, etc. Of course mistakes are sometimes made,' but we beg that the pu lie will aid in making the misslou rooms a real benefit to the poor by helping them to help themselves. We heart -ily thank all those who have during tha past week been so untiricg in their efforts to aid us. For a fry or slewed oysters call oa A.JDaghl. Preaching. By appointment elder Wm R Wel born, of 8urry eounty, N O, will preach in the Primitive Baptist church, corner Morgan and Dawson streets, to night at 7.30 p. m. Elder James A Burch, member of the sen ate, will be with him. Public eordi ally invited. The Weather. For North Carolina: Fair. Local forecast made at station for this vicinity: On Saturday : Fair weather, slight ly warmer on Tuesday. Local data for 2-1 hours ending 8 a m. today: Maximum temperature, 40; mini mum temperature 18; rainfall, 0 00. Another Fire. Yesterday morning at an early hour Winston was visited by another disastrous fire which consumed prop erty valued at about $100,000. Among the buildings destroyed were the Sneed furniture company and the Mu sic Company's building No place in the state has been visited with more extensive fires of late than Winston, and it looks like there muBt be a reg ular band of incendiaries there. Statement from the Citizen's itelief Committee. . At request of the citizen's reliet committee this statement is made for the information of our people. The o immittee met and organized Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock. As directed by the citizen's meeting the pastor of each church, of white and colored people with Messrs. A. M. McPheeters, John D Briggs, T. W. Blake, Jobn T. Pullen, W. Z Blake and X. B Broughton were given au thority to issue tickets to any family found in need no ticket to be given until the condition of the family ap plying should be personally inspected. A supply store was opened at cor ner of Morgan and Blount streets and Mr. W. W. Parish placed in charge of same. At a meeting of the committee this morning a full report was made of the work done on Friday and Satur day. The treasurer, Mr. John T. Pollen, reported that he had received $1,800 in cash. Mr. Parrish reported that 139 orders for provisions had been filled with an expenditure of $359. A careful investigation made and it was discovered that 80 of the or. ders issued were improper. Rev, Dr, Daniels introduced the following which was adopted: Resolved That the detailed report of the committee of distribution be accepted as sat'sfactory; that. in view of the numerous applications the committee is congratulate 4 that the cases of irregularity should be com paratively so few, and that the same committee be continued. N. B. Broughton, who had served the committee as chairman, stated that hid private business demanded so much of his time that he could not longer serve as chairman and do jus tice to the position. He offered his resignation, which was accepted, and the thanks of the committee tendered him for the efficient service he had rendered. Hon. Alf A Thompson was unani mously requested to take the chair manship of the committee and kindly consented to do so. The committee desires to assure the ! public that they realize the sacred ness of the trust committed to them and will thankfully receive any aid I given in reporting cases of destita i tion, or exposing unworthy appil- f cants. . , .
