Democratic at all times. MONDAY - - - ^^7^- Stop singing “Silver threads a- raong the gold,” it is ‘ silver dollars in your pocket.” Pretty cool. the PEABODY FUND. | AYe have waited long in the hope that Col. Pool would clear himself of the charge of using the Peabody fund. But it seems, from a corres pondence between Gov. Brogden and Dr. Sears, we cannot doubt but that he has misapplied a por tion ol: the fund entrusted, to him for distribution. He used it we suppose in his private business with the intention of replacing it, but in this he did a wrong which we are forced to condemn. We do not desire to apologize for his delin quencies, for the Clarion will con demn all such be they Democrats or Republicans. Many letters have been received at the Treasury containing money to be exchanged for silver. It is not generally known that silver will be given only for fractional curren- oy.liot for legal-tenders or National Bank notes. ^ j The Tadies of Wilmington and Charlotte are moving earnestly in preparation for the due observance of Memorial day. What are the ladies of Oxford going to do about this thing ? Our State Geologist, Prof. W. C. Kerr, has been appointed orator on the part of North Carolina at the Centennial. A good nppomtment. Doesn’t it make your mouth wa ter. Charleston, S. C., is now ship ping North over 1,000 qusrts of strawberries daily. Several Chicago bells aviU carry specimens of their painting to the centennial-oa their capacious cheeks. AVe extend our hearty congratu lations to our worthy contemporary the Rocky I^Iount Mail on its fourth annivei’sary. The mountains in the West were covered with snow last week. — Judge Reed is the probable Re publican nomineo for Governor. Bristo:/ is the “coming roan” of the Republicans. New Mexico is to be adniitted into the Union under the name ot‘ “Montcznma.” A inoro ap propriate name, considering the prevailing weakness ot the inhab itants, would bo “Three card- niontezuma.”— Chkario Times.
