Items of Interest from State ImmigratlonAfjeot. O. Strange, Ransom, Mich., de- aires to purchase farming r lands near gome thriving village, i where business men and the public gen erally would encourage a weekly newspaper. lie is a rnewapaper man as well as a farmer and desires to get near a small village where he can engage iii the newspaper busi ness and at the same time farm;. W. W. Patterson, of Oermanton, Pa., has invested nine hundred dol lars in an experiment of growing sweet potatoes in NVC. Mr. Pat terson is a man of means, if his ex periment is a success he will plant out one thousand acresl in sweet -potatoes every year for the Northern market. Ihe experiment is being conducted by a friend of Mr. Pat terson's, F. P. Woodward, Esq., who located; in North Carolina last year, j It is to be hoped that this venture will prove a success, for there is thousands of acres of san dy lands that will successfully grow sweet potatoes. It. Stevens, Johnson City, Tenn., will visit the Piedmont section of North Carolina to.loqk up a loca tion for a small colony of farmers arid business menu Mr. Stevens is a real estate dealer and a. man of influence. He,i'ishes to make a settlement in a- Section where he can;get a large5 quantity of land to dispose of. M r. J asL. Flyrin, of Cedar Lake, Dak., desires to purchase a farm of from two to three hundred acres; wants two thirds of the place under cultivation with samebearing fruit trees. 1 Farmers in NorthxCarolina having sueh land for sale should correspond with Mr. Flynn. x J. S. Buyer, of Epsy, Pa., goes to Swain county, X. C, to purchase farming lands for himself and fath er. They leave Pennsylvania on account of the cold and disagreeable climate. Are .Wasted AdjeetiTes. Are your oysters nice, dear? Lovely! perfectly supurb! yoarsr - - - - . . . - V Just grand! , These were the words that met my ear in the restaurant to-day. And as I looked at the two enthusiasts I tried to imagine what their speech would be were they looking upon Lake Corao in a silver moonrise, or upon the shimmer of-a sunrise tint ed sea, or upon a flock of - ruby clouds driven by a lazy wind across a daffodil sky, or upon Mount Blanc with cf storm banner unfurled from its battlementa, or voilet in the shadows ef descending night. If an oyster stew is "lovely," if a com pound of milk, melted batter, and the pretentious bivalve, with a dash of pepper and an addled cracker, is "grand," what is left for nature when the crown of the new year is blossoming upon her brow or the trumpet of tha north wind is at her lips? What is left to be said of love, or heroism, of courage, and of faith fulness, when the waiter at the oys ter house can serve us loveliness and and grandeur in a four-inch blow? Verily, the wasted adjective and the superabundant smile make the heart tired. Cut and placed in a fairly tight wooden box with a pailful or more of hot water, thus being steamed, they make excellent food. Even for ma nure making, cutting is far better. To make the garden pay there must be plenty of manure used, and the weeds must not be allowed to feed upon it. Keep something growing all the time. No investment pay better on the the farm than kindness and consid eration toward all animals. They will return kindness for kindness and will do better every way. , " It is an error to always choose the largest fowls for sitters. Those of medium size are generally better for this purpose, provided they arc not deficient in feathers. Warmth is a requisite for rearing early chickens, which one finds it difficult to pro vide early in the season. Nothing will - purify and keep a stable from odors as the free use of dry earth, and every one keeping horses or cattle will, find it pays to keej) a heap of it on hand, to be used daily. ; A few shovelfuls of earth scattered over the floor after clean ing will render the air of the apart ments pure and wholesome, ihe value of the season's manure pile may be largely increased by the free use of such absorbents. The strength of the gases and liquids absorbed is retained, and is the very essence of good manure " For some days before dropping her calf a cow should be closely looked after to see that her bag does not become feverish and sore from excessive amount of milk. , Many cows need milking for a few days before calving to avoid trouble there after.
