The following letter to a New York firm explains itself : . Washington, Jan. 1, 1SS7. ' Messrs. John Smith d- Co., GEXTSiRepljing to yours of the 18th inst., that for the prospect of having claims placed in my Hands to collect, in this vicinity, and nothing more I do not feel willing to report the "standing" of the par ty mentioned, or of any one else. I do not wish to be misunderstood as saying that I do not want paying business, but I do know that a law yer would starve as quick on com missions apd fees on collections as ho would on coancob soup in Janu ary. . ' I have had some experience in collecting since the war or rather in trying to collect. I have offered to cornp. claims by takinz old clothes. frozen cabbage, circus tickets, pat- eni meaicine, wliet stones, powder horns, old flour barrels, gourds, coon skills, jay birds, owls, or al- uiust nujimug, ana yet i nave a number of those old claims on hand unsettled. If 1 were to depend on collecting my claims for my living, my bean broth would get so thin that it would rattle in me like pot liquor in a poor dog.' I don t like to- shoot at long taw, but if you are inclined to pay any thing certain for the desired reports, 1 m your man; say $10 cash, then I'm in, or if money is scarce, I would take shoes, largo Nos., say 10s, lis and 12s, to the amount of slO, at wholesale prices. It is hard times here the niggers and the Democrats have pulled and worried each other till this country smells like cheese. How in the world would you collect money out of a people who plow little speckled bulls on hill sides ? If you were to see a nigger plowin his garden with a sow,' you, would not wonder why I don't: want to collect claims in this vicinity. - . Your sincere friend, X Experience Collector. He Pleads Guilty. New Orleans, Feb. 3. To the surprise of all Dr. T. J. Ford, when brought before the criminal court yesterday for the murder of J. C. Kirkpatrick, November 2nd, last, pleaded guilty of manslaugh ter, Dr. Ford was the leading phy sician of Shreveport, and much re spected. His young wife who was partially insane from the' opium habit, was induced to elope with Kirkpatrick, a young drug clerk. They came to New Orleans where Dr. Ford followed them and shot Kirkpatrick dead. There was a great deal of sympathy expressed for Ford. His friends crowded to his assistance and the press unani mously justified the killing, hence the surprise at his pica of guilty. It is said that he entered this plea in order to avoid a trial, and that a pardon for him will be insisted, on.' An Instrument of Death. pvew A'ork Star. A Leipsic inventor has devised an extremely dramatic mode of execu tion for criminals, Avhich possesses the additional advantage of beingj painless. The machinery consists of a platform, nine meters square approacnea uy nve steps, in -Lae center of the platform is a chafor the'" condemned man. Behjfhd it stands a figure of J u s t i cn o 1 d i n g a pair of scales in hejp' lefr hand, the scales' being movable. Under the platform is placed an electric oactery, lrom jriucli wires puss tMQUgh the Ifss oi the chair info the seat -ancr back, terminating in platinum plates. If the patient objects to. seating himself in the chair, he is simply tied in. After the sentence has been read, the ex ecutioner takes the stick, breaks it and 'places the pieces in one of the justice's scales. This descends, puts a battery in motion and finis! Death isi'ustqjitaneous and painless. :The machine .was tried on animals in the presence of a large company of invited guests and pronounced a success. ; """ ; ' '''"' . - Best Kot U Tell. Why Bustles are Worn. For the benefit of the entire mas culine sex who have puzzled over the problem of the bustle and won dered why women will wear .the thing, evt'r since bustles were first t hought of, I want to say right here that the philosophy of the bustle, the reason that women will stick to that hump with more loyalty than they show their country, their church or their lovers as. that it makes their waists look smaller. The bigger and mere sudden the swell, the smaller the--waist' will look, and that's the whole business. --Clara Belle ITatuf al "&Sta Near Bridcroport. ; The Indianapolis Journal says : Several capitalists' of thii city have had their attention called to evi dences that natural. ?as can be found at Bridgeport, eight miles west of this city. Ten years ago- a 'farmer named . Mills," while digging a well on his farm, struck a vein of gas at a depth of forty-feet below the surface. The article was found in such volume that the well had to be abandoned. The workmen at first did not' know 'what -they, had discovered, and the peculiar scent led the'ra to believe that the well cbntoined what 'they called "damps."- They .lighted a candle and lowered it in the well. The gas was ignited and blazed out of the top of the well, and in order to save the house, which was near by, the hole was immediately filled up. J. B.
