C. session last wetk at Loniifille, Ky. the necessity for a higher education of women wa elaborately discussed and aucb waa the interest taken in the debate bv the lid Loui.Tille female inttitutions and other ladies that they crowded the nan in sucu numbers as to make it hard for memWrs of the Congre to find seats. The entire debate is very interesting reading, and we regret our inability to giTe it in more satisfactory deUil than that wnicn iollows. The view of two of the speakers of opposite opin ions on the subject are all we hate space to even outline. " Ker. George L. Locke. o5 Rhode Island, opened the discussion, di viding his subject into three heads : "la higher education for women practical V "If the higher edu cation of women is practical, is it to be aesinfa.'" "Effect of coed ucation, moral and hygienic." To the first and secund heads he answered in the affirmative, and in i i ... support oi ui8 position ne reaa a comparative'statement of the resnlt of the experiments in the University of Michigan, which' receives both sexes. lie thousht women needed to be equipped so as to be placed on an equal looting -With man in fighting the battlp of life, and any women who desired should be al lowed to draw the line of her edu cation at the highest point. The question of suffrage for women did not entei into this question, but without the right to vote women exercised great influence over the affairs of the nation. People who ... . . "... urged against the higher education of women that it would remove her from the8phereof domesticity over looked tne iact tuac women were frequently forced by circumstances to leave home and enter the battle of life against her stronger counter part in the industries of the world. The remedy for the inadequacy of woman a pay lay in increasing the range of her usefulness. The range of her usefulness stopped at no pro fession requiring intellectual em ployment. The moral and hygienic ellect8 of co education, he thought, were favorable to females. Rev. George W. Dumbell, o Chattanooga, resisted the idea that women should know all that is knowable. lie admitted that the education spoken of would not change the woman physically, but it would increase largely the num ber of bread-winners, for there would be fewer marriages, because it wpuld estrange 'the sexes. The woman's" sphere wa3 her home, which it was her duty to beautify. Considering the part she had to play .and the place she had to fill, she had not the time to devote to dead languages. If these are un dertaken religion is crowded out. The'anxiety of . maternity and the cares of the household are shunned by these women of this so-called higher education. If the educa tion of a woman were for this world alone, then he naa little to say on this side of the matter. The pre paratjon for the world to come he considered a question of more mo ment, and "higher education" is antagonistic to this Woman's gentler influence in Wr own home is a wonderful force In bringing her husbitnd to a sense of his spiritual needs, lie felt shocked that the expression, "women should know all that was knowable" had found advocates. If this system of higher education were adopted the num ber of bread-wiuntrs would be largely increased. The true posi tion of woman is to reign within the home of man, to beautify, ad orn and ennoble it.
