M. lticE, We were sorry to hear of the death on Monday morning of Mr. Co wa n, th,e mother of Mr. Richard Cowan and Mrs.-A- J. Mock, of our city. Mrs. C. had been sick but a short time. Several years ago she spent most of her time with her daughter, : Mrs. Mock, and was well known and loved and respec ted in Salisbury. Her age was about 85. , J ' A sight not often seen was wit nessed by our people last Thursday. Clouds of smoke obscured the sun during the day. For several days previous we had easterly winds and the smoke of the burning marshes and bogs on the North Carolina sea coast was wafted westward. The sun, generally entirely obscured, 'at times show like a red ball would of fire as it does in aurecripse.. Mr. Mat Weant received an in jury at the car shops on 'Monday, which may prove very serious. A piece of timber accidentally fell against a circular saw, when it was violently whirled around by the saw and struck Mr. Weant. He was at once carried to his home and physicians summoned. As we go to press we cannot say whether he has not received internal injuries. They will be here sometime in Decem ber, v Mr. H. l)avey, of the Stanly Freehold mines, was in town last week. He reports that work on the mines is progressing to the ut most satisfaction. The Upcart shaft is in ore yielding 11 ozs. per ton, while the Engine and Califor nia shafts show a good point of gold. .The work on the water sup ply is being pushed ahead. The dam' is completed and the flame is in course of construction." Large quantities of the 12-inch wrought iron pipe are arriving at the depot and being hauled to the line where they are to be laid. A large force of workmen are employed putting down foundations for the immense pumps, eic, inn win insure a speedy completion of the work. The Sain Christian Mine. , For the last month the Engin eers have been steadily at work, as certaining altitudes, distances, lev els, etc., for this hydraulic and vein mine in Montgomery county. There is visi ble gold i n the rock. We have finished cleaning out the old shaft, and I have put the men to stope from the end of the old shaft in the back of the 70 Mill : 20 stamps, 13f days, crushed 448 tons of ore, :$2.8 tons, of the above were stuff cleaned out of old shaft, milled' about 1.25 per ton; ' total yieia ior tne monin n.3o ounces- of bullion.. The Nash County Gold Mines. A company was incorporated in Nash county on Monday under the title of the Mann-Arrington Gold Mining Company. The capital stock is 700,000. ' It is composed mostly of Pennsylvania capitalists, but the secretary and treasurer are residents of Raleigh. The company hold in fee simple over fiftoen hun dred acres of land in what. is known as the "Placer District," in Nash county, on which there are four well defined veins from, six inches to four feet thick. This is the first company organized for working the veins of this section. Over ten thousand dollars have been expend ed by the company in testing the mine, and the experiment resulted in making the permanent plant. Operations will be commenced at once on a large scale, and there is enough ore on hand for several months ahead. It is said to yield from $20 to $30 per ton. Roanoke News. Our friend,-Mr. Ed. Lyon is in charge of the operations of this mine, and like all other enterprises that he has been connected with, r success has attended them. Wte take the following from tlie NewVork Financial and Mining Record of the 12th inst. It is an extract from a. paper read before the American Institute of Mining Engineers by E. G. Spilsburyon a novel method of chlorination. He 6tates that the present state of per fection in the process is dne to Mr. A. Thies, of tho Phcenix Gold Mine, Cabarrus Co., N. C. : 'The cost of roasting, labor, chemicals, and power with ns will never exceed $4 per ton. So far it has not attained that figure, some of my work having been done as low as $3.15 per ton. The actual gold recovered is in all cases within a few cents per ton of the full assay value of the ore, less the amount shown by asssay to have remained in the tailings. While the gold obtained in oar stamp mill aud amalgamating-works is seldom pur er than 897 fine, the gold 'obtained by this process is generally over 978 fine." This is the lowest point in cost of. the chlorinating snlphnrated ores we have ever seen. Being convers- chlorination. our system the Handling receptacles the tailing and acrxj mulation. Thmfore we tongmta' It Mr. A. Thjes on .his uccri. This will i-iiab'e those kitiog low grade sulphides la work thcia to profit. The RocMngb&m Wonder. The Rockingham Rocket it as tonished became the landscape in front of a cellar door in which there is a small keyhole, is found depict ed on the wall opposite to the- door whenever the door is shut. The eame thing always happens in a perfectly dark chamber with only a small opening to admit the light. The camera obscuro of the photo grapher is a dark chamber on a small scale with a lens in the aper ture to make its rays diverge more rapidly and so give a larger picture than would naturally be found on the back wall. A CARD. Tlie report has gone out that the Rev. Mr. Pearson forbid uj celling his photo graphs. It is untrue He felt that it would how partiality to allow two or three the privilege, to the exclusion of scores of others who are, perhaps, just as deeply attached to him, nd so he gave us the unreserved riHt to eupply all who appreciate hinymffieientiy to want this, the best memento they can obtain of him. . v , Respectfully. ; - GALLAGHJOt liBOS.
