We have been reliably informed that on Wednesday before the Township Elections in this county, the Flat Riv er League helJ a meeting at the houie of a negro roan named Peter Leathers who lives on the Oxford road about 8 miles from hero. A daughter of Mr. James Carrington in going along that road was halted by a negro guard and told she could not pass. She went back home and her old father return ed with her. The "guard" halted them both and told them "dat line was dc dead line." And this clij man and his daughter were ret allowed &o pass. Our informant stated it was the gen eral opinion that a white man had put the negroes up to this thing, for fear, lest he might be recognized in the league by the passers-by. It is our duty to place such outrages upon re cord, that the eyes of the functiona ries may not sweetly slumber upon a volcano of barbaric ignorance and wild and excited prejudice. Hiihboro Rec. Fire and Loss of Lifa. , ho regret to icarn thai tbe fine flouring mill of Col. J. Cathey, on Pigeon river, with the who'e of his crop of wheat this year, was destroy ed by fire on Saturday night, last. While we regret the It 83 of property, we still more deeply regret the loss of a most valuable ciiien, S(r. Geo Bryson, the miller, who was burned to death in the mill. The origin of the disaster is not certainly known, but is supposed to have been caused either by the burst ing of a kerosene lamp, or from the friction of some of the machinery.. Since the above aras in tjpe, we learn the mill was not running on the night it was burned. Mr. Bryson, who was the afsistant miller, slept in the mill, and was known to have laid down" in the mill in a certain place to aicrp, uiucu taiigueu, as nis taoors and loss of sleep had been great for some days. His body was found at some distance from the place where he had laid down, and, as the mill had been rabbed two or three, times lately, there is suspicion that an at tempt to rob had been made on that night, which awakened Mr. Bryson, and the robbers finding they were discovered, and probably recognized, assaulted Mr. Bryson, stunned or murdered him, and then fired the mill. There were 1000 bushels of wheat in the building. Col. Ctheys loss cannot fall short of $8,0 00. Agheville News. , Shocking-Affair. Tho phem in enon gave rise to quite a lively excite ment in tin city. The people win witnessed.it gave variou? opinions as to its cause, some holding that it was really the expected coooet which as tronomers had declaied would bo invis ible to the naked eye, and others con tending that it was merely one of those occasional luminous nebulous displays which are k noun to occur at this sea son of the year, and which have little importance in the estimation of scien tific folks. With a view to obtaining some reliable information on the sub jct, your correspondent visited the Naval Observatory, but found that no one there had noticed the occurrence, for the very good reason that no as tromer was on the lookout in the dome of the observatory at the time of the display. Nearly all the astronomers are out of town, not having yet return ed fiom their expeditions to observe the solar eclipse. Is there a Lineal Buonaparte Alive ? The Imperial Criminal Court of Vienna, has received a letter signed "Prince Eugene Joseph Napoleon B - naparte," and dated Stuttcrard.. .Tnpp jfu, ut inc present year. In it the writer rlaims to be the son of the King of Rome, the sole ff pring of the great Nupoleon and Maria Louise, better knowi. in lustvrv as tbe iuke u Reich tidt. Tne claimant avers that his mother, "a descendent of an old and noble Hungarian family," was "very secretly married" to the Duke Rcichstadt.by whom she had two chil dren, twins, the writer and a girl, now "the wife of Prince George of Saxony The writer also claims that as a boy he was raised by a tai lor named La lwig, Wurzen, Saxony, on whom h8 was foisted by the act of his mother, whom, he says, is now liv ing, and of knowledge of whose place of residence he charges his sistera knowledge he invokes the court to enjo'a her to diru!ge, as also he wish to have an order for the examination of his birth and baptismal certificate to bo entered up. Thi3 is the case as made out circumstantially. Of course, only enquiry can demonstrate it to be a truth, or explode it as false. Against the jrobable truthfulness of the talc, however, exists the fact that the personation of princes has been the dodge of ingenius impostors for centuries, the absence of any rumor even hitherto that the Duke of Reich stadt, who died at 23 of consumption, ever married, and the current impress on, fortifi id by all kinds of sub-historical narration, thai the young man wan n imbecile in av double" sense.
