JONES . .Owner & Contributing Editor T. J. TAYLOR... Contributing Editor Entered at the Post office at War renton, N. C, as second-class matter under Act of Congress. March 3. 1879. GOD GIVE US MEN God give us men. The time demands Strong minds, great hearts, true faith and willing hands; Men whom the lust of office does not kill; Men whom the spoils of office cannoi buy; Men who possess opinions and a will; Men who have honor, men who will not lie; Men who can stand before a dema gogue And damn his treacherous flatteries without winking; Tall men, sun-crowned, who live above the fog In public duty and private thinking! For while the rabble with their thumb worn creeds, Their large professions and little deeus Mingle in selfish strife; lo! Freedom weeps! Wrong rules the land, and waiting Jus tice sleeps! THE FOOD SITUATION From the Food Administration comes the order for more economy. Monday and Wednesday have been classed as wheatless days with Tues day as meatless day and Saturday and Tuesday as porkless days. As time goes on, the need of sav ing grows apace as is evidenced by the law compelling consumers to buy an equal amount of ceral with flour. The duty of following the dictate of the Food Administration become al' iraportant. A family, and there are some such throughout Warren, who continues lo eat a3 if nothing has happened, who goes on regardless of the Food Admin istration wishes failing to observe the days set aside for especial con servation, is a family which is allow ing selfishness to creep in where pa triotism belongs; is deaf to the cry of the starving people of Europe! May every housewife in Warren, wako up and get whole-heartedly behin Hoover by observing wheatless, meat less and porkless days each week. If you will only realize, you wih save. The clarion call rings clear w save, save, save as never before! The boys in the trenches offer their all, will the man back at home wm i3 worth his salt insist on meat or Tuesdays ? The starving people of Europe, bro ther humans, with the vacant stare of starvation ask for a crust that life may be kept in your selfishness, can you ask for flour bread on Mondays and Wednesdays? The destiny of millions of lives hang on the pantry keys of the Am erican housewife. GERMAN ALIENS TO REGISTER We call attention to the notice call ing for registration of all German cit izens above 14 years of age who are not natuaralized on the 4th, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9th days of February. This notice comes to us with the re -quest that it be given widest publicity possible. Failure to register is punishable by "restraint, imprisonment and deten tion for the duration of the war." This action has been deemed neces sary because of the explosions, fires and disturbances occuring to shipping and big war business enterprises, and which disturbances are the work of supposedly friendly personage of Gei man origicn. The alien enemy classi fication will place in government hands data with which to apprehend those guilty of treasonable conduct. The postmasters of the county will bo glad to render any assistance in their power when the registrants come before them. The Doctor is First, of ourse, in Sickness or injury, but A Diug Store capable of supplying you with Drugs, Medicines and Sick-Room Goods, is al so a prime requisite. THE MORE CRITICAL THE ILLNESS THE GREAT ER THE NEED After the Doctor, we offer the most help and relief, so bring your Prescriptions and Ailments to us. igiSBisj II LET'S RAISE MORE MEAT Warren farmers- must raise -more meat. The government experts see ing the vast inroads being made upoi the meat supply of the country, calls through its County Agents upon the individuals of the Nation to rise to the occasion during the year and pro duce hogs, cattle, and fowl. Especially is an increase in poivc production desired in Warren. Coun ty Agent F. B. Newell, the Board of County Commissioners, and the two Banks here are to procure pigs and distribute through the County on easy terms as an incentive to a greater production. The wisdom of raising "hog and hominy" at home is apparent, and is daily growing more so. Let Mr. Newell hear from you. Every farmer and every citizen from a standpoint of patriotism and profit should raise more hogs this year. St.pri in tn T.anfnRtflr's nnH sicn that - 1' - o Prosperity Bulletin! Why. not, after repealing the hog ordinance, offer prizes for the biggest hog raised in town. Let us not only have . permission, but also persuasion and encouragement from the Board NOTICE: INDUSTRIAL AFFIDAVIT MEN. We publish the notice below at re quest of B. B. Williams, Government Appeal Agent: "Superior Officials and Executives of Industrial Enterprises and Land lords who have made affidavits for Registrants, who have been given n deferred classification, are required to report any change of the status of the Registrant to the Local Board or Appeal Agent. Couldn't Hold BLOOD GOT SO BAD WAS ALMOST PARALYZED ON ONE SIDE LEG SWELLED UP. LA YED OFF WORK FOK NEARLY FIVE YEARS. After sugering fory ears and being unable to work lam glad to say that once more I feel like my old self and am back on the job' declares another of those many men who had to give up work through poor health. Miners, trainmen, mechanics, and men of all kinds who spend most of their time out of doors, often lay-off and can't even hold downt heir job because of some blood trouble that gradually and like a thief in the night steals their strength and health away. Read what this wel? known Princeton, West Virginia, man says about it: "I suffered from blood poisoning in my leg and partial paralysis of one side of my body and had stomach trou ble bad. I would wake up with a numbness in my whole left side. My leg swelled up and turned purple and it got so bad I was unable to work for nearly five" years. Then a friend News of Interest From Af ton Section Snow Still With Us, and Don't; Want To Leave; Local and 1 Personal Mention. The snow which fell the 11th of De cember is still with us, but the recent rain is rapidly-melting it greatly to. the delight of all. Mr. D. L. Robertson has treated his family to a nice organ. If the weather permits there will i be service here Sunday morning by the regular pastor arid at the usual time. Miss Myrtle Duke of the Areola section is spending several days visit ing her uncle, Mr. S. R. Duke to be convenient to Warren ton where she is having dental work done. Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Duke with Mas ter Harold spent one day last week with Mr. S. K. Clark's family. Miss Bernice Skundburg is making all these days teaching, with quite of ten just a "handfull"' of pupils. As unsuitable weather prevents traveling there is scanty material for the news gleaners to handle. TO THOSE KNITTING FOR THE RED CROSS. Mrs. Adele Jones, as Chairman of the Red Cross Knitting committee, hereby notices all Red Cross knitters to refrain from knitting all articles except sweaters and sox. The sweaters are to be 23 inches long. Mrs. Jones asks for the imme diate return of all wristlet needles. All completed work is desired by next Thursday as a shipment is to oe made. Down His Job of mine advised , me to get some Acid Iron Mineral and in three days after all those long years of suffering my leg healed except a tiny spot and that was gone soon afterwards. The numb ness and paralysis left me and I feel better than I have felt in many years. It cured me of all my troubles and boosted me up so good I am back at work for the first time in years," writes W. H. Richards, Sr., Princeton, West Virginia. If a man lets his blood go. until it is sluggish and full of caids and poi sons he can hardly walk, much less keep up-with the times. Many a man is plugging along hardly making both ends meet because health holds hira back. The fellow who gets over the top of these high cost of living days is the fellow with speed, real health, rich red blood, good digestion, and ap petite and for this thousands of peo ple riyht here in this state endorse Acid Iron Mineral.
