Once the hostess in an Embassy, accus tomed to receive the homage of bril liant throngs in a foreign capital; in her last years reduced to earn her bread as a scrubwoman these are the phases in the life of a mystery woman who has just died in this town. "Mrs. Annie Smith," the name by which she chose to be known, came here about three years ago and lived alone in the tiny cottage where her body was found, half dressed, lying &n the floor of her bedroom. She was clearly a woman of refine merit and high education. The incon gruity of her attainments with her humble occupation aroused intense curiosity, but she repulsed all inquir ies regarding her past life. Once or twice, however, in speaking recently to neighbors, she let it slip that her husband had been a Mem ber of Parliament and at one time an Ambassador. To the end, however, she refused to disclose her re-al identity and inten sive police inquiries failed to reveal it Only nine per cent of the nation's cities with over 500,000 population.
