ILLS RATS
John Graham
In early life, he made a profession
of religion and united with Reedy
Creek Baptist Church and continued in
fellowship with that church as long
as he lived.
He felt impelled to speak and pray
m nil hlic. but being an inveterate t
J .
stutterer, this seemed to be impossi
ble. He, however, made it a subject
of prayer, and the fh'str time he was
called on to pray found to Tiis great
joy that in praying he did not stam
mer; and after, this he prayed and
preached without an impediment in
his speech. He was in considerable
demand as an evangelist, and was re
markably successful as a soul winner,
and nothing delighted him more than
to engage in this kind of work.
He also taught many singing
schools, and was exceedingly popular
as a singing teacher. It was remark
able that the stammering boy was so
freed from the impediment in his
speech that he could successfully en
gage in the work above indicated.
December the 23' 1873, he was
united in marriage to Miss Endora
B. Fleming, a daughter of the late
Thomas Fleming of the Mountain
View neighborhood.
Brother Riggan strove faithfully
to serve God, and dying leaves be
hind him in addition to his wife, five
daughters, one son, several grand
children, a brother and sister and
many friends who were devoted to
him. Among those who loved him
most tenderly is his granddaughters
Mrs. J B. Powell, Jr., of Warre'nton.
He was for many years a devoted
friend of the writer, who sincerely
appreciated his confidence and friend
ship. His funeral was largely attended
and the services at the grave con
sisted mainly of singing, which is
the way he would have wanted it to
be. His pastor, - Rev. J. J. Marshall,
Rev. N. W. Bobbitt and the writer
spoke tenderly of his life and labors.
