Wayne Ferguson, a 4-H club boy of Jackson county, sold twelve pure bred Poland China pigs at 180 days old for $256.93. The pigs paid nearly $2 a bushel for corn consumed while being fattened. Combined monthly statements of the State Treasurer and Auditor recently made public show a cash balance in the general fund on September 30 of $2,565,681.70 and in the highway fund $5,922,996.65. Total indebtedness of the State at that time was placed at $174,792,600. Receipts for the fiscal year for the general fund total $4,925,896.61 and for the highway fund for the same period $5,922,996. The State Highway Commission recently opened bids on projects involving the construction of twelve projects in eleven counties of the State in which around three-quarters of a million dollars will be expended. The projects include hard-surface highway jobs, improved earth type roads, an overhead crossing and one bridge. The Supreme Court holds, in an opinion written by Justice Connor, that the National Bank of Green ville was liable for the amount of $359.03 paid out on a tobacco check presented by a party other than the one to whom it was made payable, the defendant having contended that it was customary for the tobacco checks, although made to definite payee, to go through as though made to bearer.
