Littleton Holds Pi< B?few M? |V[ LITTLETON ? The annual meeting and picnic of the LitI tleton College Memorial Association was held on Saturday T at the Pavilion in Pullen Park [ in Raleigh. Alumnae of LittleKa??v ton College from many areas Of North Carolina were pres $> * ent as well as members from South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. , Mrs. George David (Dora p-x Hornaday) Stevenson of Richmond, Va., president of the Association, presided at both the morning and af to/noon sessions. The main uress for the occasion was pr?. rented by Dr. Ralph Hardee Rives of | Enfield, son of a former Litf ~?tleton?College student. Dr. Rives, who will become a K ft- member of the Department of English at East Carolina College this fall, based his ade' 5 dress on a number of experiences and reactions which he 'I had while studying and trav| . | eling in Europe in 1958. He Stressed the common bonds which unite the peoples of Europe with Americans and noted the numerous similarities between the two continents. j?:.-.'."v Dr. Rives was introduced by Ik ? Mrs. Rom B. Parker, Jr., of Enfield. At the conclusion of the lunch hour which was accom panied by a period of reunion and fellowship among the jE | alumnae and friends of the !I college, a short business meet-i ing was conducted. Miss Herring, who was present at the pro- | ceedings, attended Littleton | College as a student and served for a numbr of years as college Treasurer. Since the establishment of the Littleton College Memorial Association in 1927, Miss Herring has been the "moving spirit in the alumnae's worthy efforts." The Association has establ-; ished a $3,000 scholarship to be used for the training of Christian workers in honor of Miss Herring at Scarritt Col- f lege in Nashville. Tenn. Mrs. Stevenson and Mrs. j Doak were re-elected to served \ as officers of the Association [ j for the ensuing year. At the conclusion of the I business meeting, copies of a, memorial biography of the late; Rev. Jarnes Manly Rhodes,' president of Littleton College,, written by Mrs. Emma Thornton Nowell of Macon, were distributed to those present. Mrs. Emma Myrick Rose of Henderson also presented com-| plimentary copies of a feature j newspaper article on Littleton j Female College which appeared in the Rocky Mount Evening Telegram earlier this year. There are thousands c2 acres of land in Warren County growing hardwood bushes. This land doesn't produce enough income to pay the taxes. With a small expenditure per acre this land can be made to grow good pine timber. The best time to start work to convert hardwood land to pine is in July or August. The with a heavy bush and bog in July or August. This disking may be done at any time between July 15 and March 31, ! but the bushes die better when the work is done in July or August. This disk cuts the hardwood bushes into the ground, cuts the roots, and destroys most of the hardwoods.
