|p PAGE 2 Soil Conservation N Farmers Bog Cut By NAT WHITE, Soil Conservationist There were a lot of enthusiastic people and some skeptics at a demonstration of hardwood control sponsored by the Fishing Creek Soil Conservation District in 1954. They watched a crawler tractor pull a heavybush and bog disk through some hardwoood brush land on N. C. 43 two miles west of Areola. The devastation was something to see Trees and brush were cut into the ground and mineral oil soil exposed. The larger trees were poisoned, and the pine seed trees Stocked the area. This was the first area of brush land in Mtu.-.CII VUUIIIY IU UC {JIVl'II this treament. Since then hundreds of acres of brush land in Warren County have been converted to pine tree production by this method. The program is accelerating, and now the contractors in the business have a hard time keeping up with the re quests. There are thousands of acres of brush land in Warren County where the income can be tripled by disking, poisoning, and planting, to pine.
