Four Hurt In Headon Collision
Four persons were injured
in a headon collision on N. C.
Highway 58 four miles east of
here early Saturday night.
The drivers of the two auto
mobiles?which smashed togeth
er at 7:15 p. m. on a straight
stretch of paved highway ?
were given emergency treat
ment at Warren General Hos
pital and released.
A Negro hitch-hiker, a pas
senger in one of the automo
biles, was reported in satis
factory condition here. Hospital
authorities said Dozier Rice,
52-year-old Negro passenger in
one of the wrecked vehicles,
suffered lacerations of the face
and head.
Mrs. Kathcri.," Bledsoe, 26,
of Raleigh, was released from
the hospital on Tuesday after
receiving treatment for facial
lacerations and a foot injury.
She was a passenger in the car
driven by her husband, Willie
Jackson Bledsoe, 28, who re
ceived a mouth injury in the
crash.
Trooper V. R. Vaughan of
Warrenton said Bledsoe was
driving en route to Warrenton
at the time of the crash. Ac
cording to eyewitnesses, his
automobile pulled onto the
shoulder of the highway when
a vehicle driven by Lonnie
Tippett, 33, of Rt 2, Enfield,
passed a string of cars on a'
hill. |
Tippett was unable to avoid
a collision and struck the
Bledsoe automobile on the
shoulder of the road. Both
automobiles were damaged con
siderably and damage to the
two was estimated in the
neighborhood of $150C.

Catholic Church
To Be Built On
Norlina Highway
Construction of a Catholic
church midway between War
renton and Norlina is expected
to begin early this spring.
Plans for the new church are
nearing completion, but bids
for its construction have not
yet been let, according to an
announcement made yesterday
by Father Kenneth I. Parker,
priest of St. Paul's Catholic
Church of Henderson.
The new church will be
built a short distance east of
U. S. Highway 401 linking War
renton and Norlina". The build
ing will be situated on a tract
of lard purchased several years
ago from Dr. Donald Mules.
For many years the land was
used for farming purposes by
Sam T. Allgood.
Of concrete block construc
tion, the church will be of con
temporary design and will cost
"in the neighborhood of $10,
000," Father Parker said.
The church will have a seat
ing capacity of from 40 to 50
persons. Behind the sancutaryj
will be a vestry room with
overnight quarters for the
priest-in-charge.

on the plans which will be sub
mitted to Bishop Vincent S.
Waters of Raleigh for final
approval before the construc
tion contract is let.
Currently some 20 Catholic
parishioners attend services
conducted by Father Parker in

Health Officer To Split
Job With Franklin Co.
A change in the set up of
the Warren County Health De
partment whereby the services
of the Health Officer will be
shared by two counties was ap
proved by the Warren County
Board of Commissioners here
Monday.
Under the plan?approved by
the Boards of Health of Warren
and Franklin Counties?Dr. W.
Burns Jones will direct the
Health Departments of both
counties, effective immediately.
He will give two and one-half
days each week to each de
partment, and will continue to
reside in Warrenton.
Dr. Jones came to Warrenton
as Health Director in June
1960. He was employed on a
full-time basis to share in the
expense ol his salary. Before
the death of Dr. A. D. Gregg,
former health director. Warren
and Vance Counties were serv
ed on a part-time basis by a
single health director. Follow
ing the death of Dr. Gregg
Vance County employed a full
time health director, but later
shared him with Granville
County.
Dr. JOnes told the commis
sioners Monday afternoon that
he feels that the Warren Coun
ty Health Department is now
well organized and that it can
be successfully operated on a
part-time basis.
The change in the Health
Department set-up will mean a
savings of more than $4,000
annually for Warren County.
As joint director of the health
departments of the tow coun
ties, Dr. Jones will receive a
salary of $11,400 a year, com
pared with the $9,100 he has
been receiving as Warren Coun
ty health officer. In addition
Dr. Jones had been receiving
a travel allowance of $70 a
month. Now Dr. Jones will re
ceive $5520 from Warren
County?one-half of his salary
?instead of $9,100, and travel
allowance will be cut to $35 a
month.
Dr. Jones also announced
that Miss Betty T. King, clerk
to the Board of Health since
1949, had resigned, effective
immediately. He said that Mrs.
Graham Boyd had been em
ployed on a temporary basis to
replace Miss King and asked
the board to change the classi
fication of a new clerk to min
us two, which would allow the
starting salary of Mrs. Boyd
to be set at $2,520. The com
missioners granted the request.

member Monroe Gardner of
Warrenton had appeared be
fore the board to ask for
adoption. Newsom told the
commissioners that he could
see no reason why the regula
tions should not be adopted
now and said that he felt that
some of the issues raised in
opposition to the adoption were
hardly germaine. Commission
er Robert Thorne, a member of
the Planning Board, also spoke
in favor of the adoption, but
other members said that they
wanted more time for study
Newsom said that he feels
that a month's delay is not go
ing to do any great amount of
harm, but he would like to see
Warren County take the lead

stead of dragging its feet.
The commissioners at their

Town Studies Construction
Of Sewage Treatment Plant
The Town of Warrenton must
construct a sewage treatment
plan within the next three to
five years, and already the
Town Cimmissioners are begin
ning to make plans for its con
struction.
Meeting in ? a called session

with the State Department of
Water Resources, discuss plans
of the department to clear up
streams of North Carolina, and
tell of the steps that Warren
ton must take in this plan.
Turnage said that there is
no question but that the town
will be required to build a sec
ondary sewage treatment .Plant
here. He could not be definite
as to the time limit, but said
that he did not believe that it
would fye as long as five years.

mined by the efforts being
made by municipalities, he
Train Hits Car;
Driver Not Hurt
Jim Beckwith of Warrenton,
manager of the Warren Feed
Mills of Norlina, suffered only
a bad fright around 9:30 a. m.
Monday when his small Dau
phine car was struck by a
Florida-bound SAL passenger
train.
Beckwith's car skidded on the
early morning snow and ice as
he tried to stop and the train
hit the right-hand fender which
was torn loose from the car.
The ear was twisted sideways
by the impact.

However, he said, it would
t be well to proceed with the
construction as rapidly as pos
' sible in order to stand a better
'chance of obtaining a federal
' grant covering 30 per cent of
| the cost and to reduce as quick
j ly as possible what could be
a health menace.
Turnage said that while the
Federal Government had agreed
to pay 30 per cent of the cost
of building sewage treatment
plants, enough money has not
been appropriated to cover all
the demands. Everything being
equal, he said, the grants
would be given to the towns
which were' making the best
efforts to build such plants.
Some evidence of this effort
would be the employment of
an engineer, the selection of
a site, the approval of plans
for the plant and plans for its
financing.
Warrenton presently dumps
its raw sewage into Fishing
Creek which is a tributary of
the Tar River. Turnage said
that the Water Resources De
partment is now in the process
of classifying the waters of the
Tar River basin. When the
classification is completed a
copy would be sent to War
renton. Some time next sum
mer a plan would be submitted
for the Town of Warrenton
which would be given six
months to begin Its plans for
the construction of a sewage
treatment plant.
The matter of building such
a plant here has already been
up for discussion by the com
missioners and one of the plans
to help defray the expense of
the project is the imposition of
a sewer tax upon all the water
users. During the discussion
with Turnage, H. W. Holt,
chairman of the Water Com
mittee, said that it is likely
that such a tax would be im
posed with the adoption of the,
1962-63 budget.
