Negro FARM AGENT NEWS UEONABD C. COOPER Negr* Cmt; Agent l w. njtms &ML Negro County Agent TOBACCO GRADES EFFEC TIVE SOON New official standard grades for flue-cured tobacco, putting emphasis on maturity and other quality factors, will go into effect May 13. The new grades will num ber 157, compared to the present 173. An original proposal called for cutting the number to 145, but the Department of Agriculture decided not to delete first or choice quality grades. Director S. E. Wrather of the Agriculture Marketing Service Tobacco Division, said if growers will place more emphasis on quality it would give a boost to the industry and to exports. The new grades stress ma turity and closely related fac tors of leaf structure and body. The department said the grades for slick or right faced tobacco, which lacks the desirable qualities of por ousness and graininess, will provide a more direct and realistic basis for the segre gation of these tobaccos. Practices said to have caused a decline in quality include over or improper fer tilization, close spacing of plants, excessive irrigation, topping plants too high, chem ical sucker control, harvesting immature tobacco, and poor sorting and grading. "These bad practices have been adopted," the department said, "because many farmers have been trying to produce quantity rather than quality." The department said price rapport loan ratea for Um 1963 crop will be revised be tween tba revised grades. Support prkaa, officials said, ahould reflect tba true valuo of the tobacco, regardless of the factora which may cause a visible reduction in quality. All first or choice quality grades were kept after there was an indicated need for such grades, particularly as related to educational work. Wrather said only a very small amount of tobacco falls into these grades, but experi ment station officials and others felt the grades should be retained. Announcement By Negro Agent Phone 204-1 MRS.
