Trans-World Airlines (TWA)
perishable cargo jets are flying.
Five hours from the San Fran
cisco-Los Angeles area to New
York with fresh fruits and veg
etables. Overnight to London.
These new Jets have a 90,000
pound cargo capacity and make
it possible to transport the high
est quality products to market
with a minimum of transit de
terioration.
The initial flight, on Dec. 6,
carried lettuce, broccoli, aspa
ragus, celery hearts, artichok
es, figs, and last-of-the-season
strawberries from California!
Thus an ultra-modern system of
transportation has been made
available to the shippers of per-|
lshable fresh produco.
According to a recent study
made by the Washington State'
University, fresh fruits and
vegetables are still favored by j
the consuming public. Here;
are some of the reasons why
this is true.
When fresh iruits and vege
tables were in season, themaj-;
ority of housewives bought
them. Fruits were important
as afternoon and evening
snacks. Fresh was thought to:
be "most tasty" and "nutri-i
tious". The families surveyed
served fresh fruits and vege
tables frequently. Almost two
thirds served fruits at break
fast seven days a week.
Ninety-five per cent of the fam
ilies served vegetables (otheri
week. Potatoes appeared at
dinner every day in almost one- .
third of the households.
There were some unfavorable
reactions. Sixty per cent feeli
that fresh fruits were priced too
high in and out of season. Fresh j
vegetables were priced too high,
when out of season. Mostj
meal planners considered the
processed products more con-!
| venient to use.
The findings of this study, j
that the majority of the consu
mers favor fresh fruits and
vegetables, supports results
obtained from previous studies.
It Is Indicated that more, re
search will be initiated to de
velop methods to prolong the
periods of availability and to
maintain fresh produce at op
timum freshness and quality
throughout the harvesting and
marketing periods.
The population Is growing and
the demand tor fruits and veg
etables both fresh and proces
sed, will Increase at a rapid
rate, because approximately 42
per cent of our dally diet Is
composed of fruits and vege
tables.
