HABDAGE Extension Chairman The Warren County Extension Service uses information from the Farm Census to plan and implement their yearly programs as well as the long-time program. We hope that all farmers will give the census takers information as nearly correct as possible inorderfor the census to be accurate. Over the years, we have relied on this information for many things and have found it to be the best information we can find on what is taking place farm-wise in the county. WHY THE FARM CENSUS? To give the economy of North Carolina and its various counties an advantage in developing agriculture and industry. To provide in greater geographic detail essential farm facts not available annually from other sources. To protect the farmer's in vestment by providing him sound Information on which to base decisions. To eliminate ^accurate and misleading reports that would be circulated if factual data were not provii d. To provide reh. ble information to agri-businesses, transportation and other interested concerns. To help in attracting and locating new Industry such as packing houses, equipment dealers, livestock markets, etc. To aid in maintaining vital historical records on land use, crops and livestock showing trends and distribution patterns. In Memoriam In loving memory of John Ernest Moody, Jr.,'s birthday, December 18, who was killed in Vietnam July 13, 1970. Dear to the hearts of his loved ones Are the memories of our soldier boy. His courage, his strength and his bravery Through our sadness, brings one touch of joy. His life was so youthful and carefree He was friendly and kind to us all, But the day came when he had to leave us The voice of his country had called. The parting was sad the day he left For his duties across the sea. We didn't know then it would be the last time Your face onthlsearth we would see. The war is so heartless and cruel, In Vietnam, the bullets fly fast. And somewhere out there in the battle The enemy found you at last. We can't understand why these things must be, Or why we can't live in peace; But one. day we hope to see him again After this life of sorrow shall cease. •HIS MOTHER AND DAD In memory of my father, Sandy Powell, born Dec. 18, 1892; departed this life Oct. 14, 1966. Dear Dad you're not forgotten Though you had to go away. Fond memories of you linger With me each and every day. In my mind I often see you Helping those who were in need Visiting the sick and shut-In, Always doing some good deed. The Christian leadership you Ferocious Ways Of Piranhas Mystifying WASHINGTON - Piranhas may perform Instant surgery on fishermen who rashly reach Into South American rivers. But the fish also may Ignore a tasty herd of cattle swimming the river or Indian women washing clothes as children splash nearby. Paul Zahl, senior natural scientist of the National Geographic, spent months in jungle backwaters to run down the truth about these fish and their reputation for ferocious ways and nonstop appetites. In the November magazine he writes they are like other fish In at least one way: "Younever know when they'll feel like biting. " But when they do, they can be pretty he art-stopping. Writes one veteran fish expert about the piranha: . . teeth so sharp and jaws so strong that It can chop out a piece of flesh from a man or an alligator as neatly as a razor or clipoffa finger or toe, bone and all, with the dispatch of a meat cleaver." Beyond that, the triangular teeth, which grin oversized In the smallish piranhas, tightly Interlock when the powerful Jaws snap shut. These formidable weapons logically gave the piranha its name. In the dialects of the Amazon's Tupl Indians, plra means fish, and ranha tooth. Virtually all the piranhas, about 20 species, belong to the genus Serrasalmus of the family Characidae, which also includes many good-tempered aquarium fish. The piranhas menace the fresh water rivers and stagnant pools of 4 million miles of South America's tropics. Most fearsome of allpiran gave me Serves to strengthen me each day. Knowing God's sustaining power Will guide me In the upward way. Dad, you're missed by those who love you But we know that God knows best, Since your work on earth was finishedop, God has given you eternal rest. Daughter, (MRS.) LAURA P. GRISSOM has is Serrasalmus nattereri, about « foot of shimmering black flab with an wroprlately blood re«l belly. The other varieties have more pallid underaldea. Dr. Zahl witnessed the characteristic murderous mass attack at a school of nattererl. A guide with a rope lowered a dead monkey into a river pool which Immediately began shuddering withabelow-the-surface mangling. A few minutes later a small dripping skeleton was hauled back into the canoe. Despite the potential peril, Indian fishermen wade the waters apparently with little fear, though many bear ugly scars on their legs. They fish for piranhas for food — Dr. Zahl likened their taste to bass—using steel wire, nets slung between hand poles, or by forcing fish within spear range by squeezing root and vine Juice into the water, ft retards oxygen absorption by the fish. Lurid tales of piranhas in waters at other times safe from attack add up to a single certainty: The fish are highly unpredictable. But riverbank theories abound, Including possible effect on the piranhas' behavior by water temperature, the time of the year, availability of food, and the river level. Though bitten a couple of times, a Protestant missionary told Dr. Zahl he still bathes in a nearby piranhaInfested river. "So does the Catholic padre on the opposite bank," he added. "He once swam the river to visit me. There's a man of faith!" Must Prepare For Trips With Children RALEIGH - Traveling with young children Isn't so hectic If you make preparations for entertaining them on the way. Therefore. Mrs. Faye Haywood, extension family relations specialist, North Carolina State University, suggests you let the children help you pack a "play case." This, she says, can be a doll suitcase, carry-all zipper bag or a cardboard box. Or, If you wish, you might place all Items In the pockets of a closet shoe holder and attach It to the back of the front seat. For the "play case," select several small toys the children enjoy; such as a truck, car, doll and blanket or stuffed animals. Then add some favorite books, and creative-mar terlals, such as a pack of scrap paper, a pair of blunt end scissors, and a box of crayons to help while away the miles. A batch of colored pipe cleaners might keep children busy for a while and puppets of all Cards Of Thanks Copy for cards of thanks must be In this office by Tuesday night, earlier If possible, accompanied by $1.00 to cover cost of Insertion.
