Guitar Performer Entertains
UDC Members During Meet
John Winchester, Artist-inResidence
at Vance-Granville
Technical Institute, entertained
members of the Warren County
Chapter, United Daughters of
the Confederacy, Friday afternoon
at the home of the hostess,
Mrs. John Kerr, Jr., at
Warrenton.
Mr. Winchester, a native of
Atlanta, Ga., has been playing
the guitar for twelve years. His
formal training in classical
guitar was under John
Sutherland at the University of
Georgia in Athens where he
graduated in May 1975 with a
Bachelor of Music degree. In
1973, Mr. Winchester studied
under Maestro Andres Segovia
in Madrid, and his performance
in the class won him a
scholarship for study under
Maestro Jose' Tomas in
Sontiago de Compastela. He
returned to Spain in 1974 for
further work with Maestro
Tomas. He later studied again
under Maestro Segovia as one
of twenty students chosen from
over two hundred applicants.

A poem, "Planted Deep,"
written by Mrs. Annie Fitts
Dameron, was read by Mrs.
Henry F. Twitty. Information
on the District meeting on
March 25 was given by Mrs.
Twitty, who also reported on
the Randolph Relief recipients.
Prior to the meeting,
delicacies were served from the
beautifully appointed table in
the dining ro6m by the hostess
as Mrs. Norwood poured tea.

Gears Must Be Switched At Sick Time
When a child is sick, it's time
to switch gears for his care and
entertainment.
Like any adult, he may
wonder and worry about
himself and his diseases,
reminds Dr. Cynthia Bishop,
extension human development
specialist, North Carolina State
University.
Let him ask questions, she
suggests.Give him reassurance.
And try to give him some
activities since he will feel like
doing something part of the
time.
Also, activity will benefit his
eating and sleeping habits
during illness and keep him
from being so tense and
restless, Dr. Bishop points out.
The sick child will tire more
easily, however, so don't overdo
your suggestions, the
specialist cautions. And his attention
span may be shorter
than usual, so it may be hard to
Ruritans Give
Check For Aid
The Afton-Elberon Ruritan
Club held its regular monthly
meeting on March 8 and
presented a check of $638.20 to
Tommy Pope, special guest.
These funds were raised by
having two pancake suppers to
help defray the large hospital
and medical expenses of Mr.
and Mrs. Pope's infant son.
A. A. Wood of the Warrenton
Fire Department was guest
speaker for the evening. He
explained the operations of the
department and of the needs of
new equipment for the
Afton Elberon Fire Department
to meet the requirements
of a "First Class Department."
He said this new equipment is
expected to be purchased
sometime this year.
Danny Wright of the Aycock
Club showed slides taken at the
Ruritan National Convention
held in Philadelphia. Pa., in
January.

chairman from the Aycock
Club, Tommy Pope and Carter
Pope and Alfred Ellington of
Warrenton with 17 regular
members of the club.

abandoned four years ago, or

When giving the sick child
equipment and toys to play
with in bed, try to stay away
from extremely messy materials,
Dr. Bishop advises. Often
the child will develop a
negative attitude toward anything
that requires extensive
clean up after play, since this
can be tiring.
For example, felt-tip pen
"Paints" pictures as well as
water colors if the child is
bed-ridden. Of course, if the
child is able to be at a table,
include pastes and paints in his
activities so he can be creative.
A new object in the sick room
might be a welcome addition.
So, have the child make a
mobile to hang over his bed or
from a window.
