DANIEL BOONE Bicentennial Mini Page Prepared By The Warren County Association Of Classroom Teachers Clarice R. Gfeene, President t Number 6 Darnel Boone expedition \«Vo N\arcV \ns". Daniel Boone was a great frontiersman and hunter. Daniel loved the^ dangers and pleasures of life in ihet^ woods He was a crack shot with his/ long, clumsy rifle, and he could follow"* the trail of a bear or a deer better than most Indians. Daniel Boone had trapped and hunted in Kentucky as early as 1767. In 1775 he blazed the Wilderness Trail up the side of the Cumberland Mountains, through the Cumberland Gap, and along the Kentucky River. Soon hundreds of pioneers were pounding along the Wilderness Trail into the beautiful Kentucky country. Little settlements sprang up at Boonesborough, named for the famous leader, and at Harrodsburg and ^Lexington. Several times Daniel Boone was captured by the Indians. Often he t ven \r\ fYmnaqe -V vetue In OUJA LtGEND OF THE LEPRECHKUN barely escaped from them 'with his life. Daniel Boone liked the dangers and excitement of wild new country. When a number of settlements had been made in Kentucky he grew restless. He felt he needed "elbow room." So he packed up his family and moved on to new adventures in Missouri. BULLOCK Students at Norlina High School are now experiencing the "calm before the storm." This period results from the stalemate between basketball games and baseball and softball games. The NHS varsity boys ended their season, of which we are very proud, last Thursday night in a defeat by Louisburg. Members of the Mu Alpha Theta, Math Club of NHS took the National Mathematics Exam on Tuesday of last week. The scores from the tests will be compared with those of other high school students taking the same test. On this same day, five senior members of the NHS Beta club visited North Warren Middle School to help begin a Junior Beta Club there. They explained the objectives of the club, projects that could be done, membership in the club, and the Beta emblem. North Warren has many prospective new members. The club will be sponsored by Miss Clark and Mrs. Townes, two teachers at North Warren. Tuesday night saw another meeting of the "rivala" in a basketball game. The Norlina District Faculty played the Warrenton District Faculty ir two games in the Norlina High School gym. Airman Hawkins Is Assigned Airman Luvenia Hawkins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter H. Hawkins of Route 2, Warrenton, has been assigned to Chanute, Illinois. She has completed her instruction as Medical Material Specialist at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas. Airman Hawkins entered the Air Force in September, 1975, and completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. She is a 1970 graduate of John Graham High School abd attended A&T University in Greensboro. In 1971 the Uwharrie Game Management Area was expanded to contain the entire Uwharrie National Forest and become a part of the North Carolina Game Lands program, administered by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission in cooperation with the National Forests in North Carolina. Other Programs Fill The Void At John Graham High By PAULTHOMPSON Now that basketball is finis for another year, the students of John Graham have found other ways to amuse themselves. On Wedneday, March 24, at 7 p. m., the Brickettes will sponsor an "Almost Anything Goes" type of Competition between the sophomore, junior and senior classes tof JG. As one of the creators of .the unusual events to be held in this contest, let me say it will be very interesting and worth the $1 admission fee. Commercials aside, other news at school this week is a faculty basketball game Tuesday night with — who else—Norlina vs. John Graham! Vera Gomes departs from .Our school Friday. Her route is winding, from Raleigh to Washington to Pittsburgh, etc., before she even leaves the country. We wish her good luck iand have been proud to have her with us this year. The Yellow Jackets beat Vance High School at baseball last Friday, 2-1. Ronald Green belted a home run to nip the Vikings on their home field. Wednesday of this week the Jackets travel to Enfield.
