Museum of Art has acquired, through gift or purchase, more than 100 works of art including a bronze sculpture by Alexan der Archipenko and a collection of rare African objects from the Congo River Basin. The works, whose acquisition during the last part of 1976 was approved at a December meeting of the N. C. Art Commission, will be displayed in various museum exhibitions during 1977. The Archipenko sculture. Blue Dancer," is a dancing female figure poised gracefully on one toe on a pedestal that can be turned. Cast from bronze in 1913, the statue was then treated with a chemical process that gave it a blue patina. Ukraine, lived most of his life in the United States. His statue is a major addition to the state's collection of modern American art. A major gift of African art was donated to the museum by the Bronson family of Califor nia. Lee Bronson, his wife Dona and his brother Robert gave the museum 38 pieces from Migeria and the Congo River Basin. The objects include masks, fetishes, instruments and sym bols of tribal royalty made of wood, fiber, hide, feathers and ivorv. A significant addition to the museum's growing collection of the ethnographic art of various continents, the objects represent the fiakuba. Hemba, Basonge, Dengese, Bajokwe. Trova. born in 1927 in St. Louis, has become famous for his creation of a featureless, armless, pot-bellied figure which he has said describes his view of modern man — "a flawed. fallen, imperfect and unfit creature who constantly needs technological boosts to main tain his equilibrium on the Wheel of Fortune, where he is alternately rising and falling." Trova completed "study for Falling Man" in 1966. A tabletop-type sculpture of stainless steel and nickel plated bronze, it includes four of the famous Trova figures surrounded by cogs, arrows and other symbols of modern technology. An untitled work by North Carolina artist Frank Faulkner was also purchased bv the museum. It is a large, abstract collage on nvlon completed in 1976.
