Call Defeats
Norlina Hopes

Be Sure Site Is Large
Enough For Tree Type
Only trouble and disappointment
await, those do-it-yourself
home landscapers who locate
large-growing trees too close to
the house or other buildings.
It's easy to overlook the fact
that the little stick of a pecan
tree we're planting this winter
will eventually reach twice the
height of the house and spread
25 or 30 feet in all directions.
Pecan trees can be among the
most valuable species you can
place in the home landscape.
One of the first requirements is
that you have a space adequate
to accommodate it's eventual
size, cautions North Carolina
State University extension
landscape horticulturist Henry
J. Smith.
"A pecan tree needs 50 feet
of space in which to spread,"
Smith says. "And be certain
that you don't plant it beneath
utility lines where it would
eventually have to be topped by
the power or telephone
company."
The same rule of thumb
applies for locating all largegrowing
trees. Locate them no
closer than about 25 feet from
the house or building.

Certain Features
Aid To Durability
What's blue, has two legs and
is a blessing for most parents?
"Jeans," says Harriet Tutterow,
extension clothing specialist,
North Carolina State
University.
Jeans seem to have endurance
built right in for all the
climbing, scuffing and sliding
kids do, she says.
But there's a wide variety of
the pants on the market, Miss
Tutterow cautions. So for the
greatest durability, look for
jeans with:
• close, even stitching and
double-stitched seams that
won't easily give way. This is
especially important in the
waistband, crotch, pockets and
other stress points.
• pocket openings that are
reinforced with rivets and bar
tacks at the ends. Children will
be straining those pockets with
bottle caps, rocks and other
collectables.
fasteners, including snaps,
buttons and zippers, should be
strong and secure. No raw
fabric edges should show
around the fly front.
• reinforced knees. These
should be sewn flat and on the
same grainline as the pant leg.
• cotton blended with nylon
or polyester. This fabric
combination will make jeans
more durable but not so soft as
100 per cent cotton.
