Clothes Change
Helps Warming
Keeping warm this winter is
as easy as changing your
clothes.
Replacing lightweight garments
with heavier ones can
make a greater impact on
keeping you warmer than you
realize, says Judieth Walker,
extension specialist in clothing
at North Carolina State
University.
A woman who wears slacks
instead of a skirt and puts a
light long-sleeved sweater over
her blouse will feel as
comfortable at 67 degrees as
she previously did at 70.
A man who replaces a shortsleeved
shirt with a long-sleeved
one wears a t -shirt and a tie.
and replaces ankle-length socks
with knee-length socks can
keep himself 2 degrees warmer.
Adding a light long-sleeved
sweater will add another 2
degrees of warmth: a heavy
one. 3.7 degrees.
Several layers of lightweight
clothing will keep you warmer
than one heavy layer because
air is trapped between each of
the lavers. This air is heated bv
bodv heat and. in turn,
insulates the body.
Contrary to popular belief,
tight clothing will not keep you
anv warmer. It will, in fact,
inhibit circulation so that the
bndv will not warm itself as
efficiently.
Natural fibers such as cotton
and wool will allow perspiration
and bodv moisture to evaporate
from vour skin, which is
essential for keeping warm.
Putting on a hat or scarf will
help to warm up all areas of the
bodv. Almost 90 percent of the
b<{?iv's heal loss is af tile head.
When the Reat can no longer
escape, it goes toother areas of
the bodv.
Re sure vour clothes are
clean and drv. If the air pockets
in and around fabrics are filled
with water or dirt particles,
thev cannot hold the warm air
and will not insulate the bodv.
Wear clothes which fit close
at the wrists, ankles and neckplaces
where warm air might
circulate with cold and escape.
A belt at the waist or a
tucked-in blouse will help trap
air in that area of the bodv.
Make an old umbrella look
practically new again by
brushing the fabric with a
solution of ammonia and warm
water.
