Northern Vaughan 4-H Club Meets By KATHLEEN SELLERS Reporter The Northern Vaughan 4-H Club held its monthly meeting it the home of Mrs. Mable Richardson at 7 p m. on March 14. The president, Ben Sellers, presided. Devotion consisted of the Fledge of Allegiance led by Kathleen Sellers, the 4-H Pledge, a song and prayer. The secretary, Joyce Vick called the v roll and read the minutes. Six members were present and four leaders. The old business was a talk on how we liked our make and bake sale. Everyone seemed to have enjoyed the sale. We sold everything baked. A total of $23.75 was piade from the sale. New business concerned camp mail and going to camp. Mrs. Christine Sellers, leader, discussed the camp letter and asked who would be going to camp. We talked about how we could make more money to go to camp. The group decided on picking cucumbers this summer. Our next meeting will be in the basement of Ashley Grove Church on April 11 at 7 p. m. Refreshments were served and the meeting closed with the 4-H Motto. Akron. Ohio, is the rubber capital of the world. [Staff Photo] Honor Society Installs Newcomers At JGHS By ELAINE TUNSTALL The faculty and student body were present for the annual induction ceremonies of the John Graham Chapter of the National Honor Society. The title of the program was King Honor and his Knight*, in which King Honor, Ricky O'Neal, sent his trusted Knights, fellow members of the honor society, to find trustworthy subjects for his kingdom. Along with the new season comes baseball games, track and field events, plans for the Junior-Senior dance, and many other activities. Chemistry, biology and physics students were accom panied by teachers, Mrs. Ann Laonipon and Ben Howard, last Wednesday to the Environmental Protection Agency in Chapel Hill. The Agency is primarily concerned with experiments which determine how certain pollutants affect humans. The group was given tours of the Computer Center, Exposure Chambers, and Pulmonary Function, Chemistry, and Microbiology laboratories. The annual Miss John Graham Pageant, which was held last Wednesday evening, was a terrific success. Master* and Mistress of Ceremonies were Jerry Hawkins and Juanita Hawkins. Special congratulations go to Ms. Barbara Ann Pullen, a senior, for winning double honors that evening as she was chosen "Miss Congeniality" by the other girls participating in the pageant, and was also crowned the new Miss John Graham for 1977. Waves Reminded That Graduation Is Not Far Off By DANYLU PALMER Reporter All N.H.S. seniors are extremely joyful due to the arrival of invitations, calling cards, senior keys, appreciation gifts, and souvenir announcement folders. June 10 will be here before they know it. The faculty council approved the following successful activities last week: bake sale held Saturday morning at 9:30; car wash held on the N.H.S. parking lot beginning at 11 a. m. on Saturday; dance held Friday "night from 8-11:30. Mr. and Mrs. Clint Hege, Patricia Hicks, Bob Taylor and Judy Newman attended a lay witness mission Friday through Sunday at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Silver Spring, Md. Butler Newman, from the Naval Academy, joined the group on Saturday. A men's invitational basket ball tournament is being held Monday through Friday al N.H.S. The finals will be held Friday night. Mrs. Crump Is Elected New Northside PTA President The Northside Elementary School P.T.A. elected new officers on Monday night, March 21. Sixty-five parents V. Center, Norlina, Leggett, Eaver Equipment, Hoboes, South Hill, Holland Supply and Zayne Electric. N.H.S. wishes to thank Park View Junior High School's drill team for giving an outstanding performance to the students and faculty at N.H.S. on Wednesday and to the director, Mrs. Ellen Grant and Mr. M. G. Walker, principal. The drill team consisted of 19 girls from grades seven through nine. They performed a pom-pom, a march and a dance routine. and teachers voted for Janice Crump as their president. Bill Perry as vice president, Sandra Norwood as secretary, Fannie Plummeras assistant secretary and Rufus Andrews as their treasurer. On Monday, April 25, the^p newly elected officers will be installed. The P.T.A. had on display one of the television sets and the turntable and amplifier purchased from the proceeds of the P.T.A. Fall Festival. Mr. H. H. Greene, Northside principal, introduced the guest speaker, J. R. Peeler, Superintendent of Warren County Schools. Mr. Peeler commended his principals and teachers and expressed his love for the Smoke Signals Mews Of Warren Academy This past week has been • busy one for the K-6 grades. They have been busy with practice of the Disney produc tion and their home work as well as school work. This is a big week for these young students! They have worked hard in order to insure a successful program Friday night. We hope that the weather will cooperate as well as the students have and that it will be a beautiful night! We certainly do not want their costumes to get wet after all the work that has gone into the making of them. Let us give credit where it is due, and we think that it is more than due to the following teachers, Mrs. Julius Banzet, III, the director and pianist for the "Disney on Parade" production, and Mrs. Carlton Quails, Jr., the costume designer. These two have been assisted by Mrs. Wallace Brown, Mrs. John Coleman, Mrs. Jim Davis, Mrs. A1 Fleming, and Mrs. Bob Traylor. Do not forget "Disney on Parade" Friday evening, March eight institutions under his jurisdiction, saying they were analogous to eight children loved by 'their father. An informative talk on school consolidation proceeded. Consolidation means "a united front" which would provide "a better facility" and therefore, "a better curriculum." Consolidation would "allow more opportunities for the gifted students," providing "better music ' departments, better science departments, with more space, facilities, and equipment." Mr. Peeler felt that improved school facilities would create community unity which would be a drawing force for industry. He reported on the progress being made, regarding land acquisition and approval of such acquisition by state organizations involved in such plans. The meeting was adjourned. Plans for P.T.A. spring and summer projects will be discussed at the April 25th meeting. 25, at 8 p. m. This promises to be the most exciting evening ever at Warren Academy. We promise that you will be "carried away" with the costumes, scenery, the lighting effects and the talented students at Warren Academy. The baseball season starts this Friday. The game will be played on the field at the Recreation Center. The opposing team is Northeast Academy, and the game starts at 3:30 p.m. We wish our baseball team a successful season! Let us start the season right and win the first game! We are happy to announce that this year for the first time Warren Academy will have a girls' softball team. This team will be coached by Mr. Bobby Fleming, who coached the J.V. girls' basketball team to a conference championship. We hope the softball team will do as well. Their first game will be Friday, March 25, at 3:30 p. m. The opposing team is Northeast Academy. The game will be played on the Warren Academy athletic field. Good luck and may all of you hit home runs! The boys' baseball team and the girls' softball team will be playing on the same day, at the same time, and same academy. The golf team, composed of Carl Quails, Robert Porter, Jeff Andrews, Victor Coleman and Allan Burrows, has its first match of the season Thursday, March 24, at 2 p. m. The boys will be playing at home on the golf course at the Warrenton Golf Club. The team will be playing Rocky Mount Academy and Vance Academy. Good luck, golf team, start this season off with a win, too! We want to congratulate three winners in the Warren Conservation District essay contest. We are happy and proud to announce that the three winners are Cynthia King, first place; Stewart Johnson, second place; Kelly Fleming, honorable mention.
