Residents
Ask Better
Facilities
A delegation of Washington
Street residents made a plea
for road paving and the
installation «,.* a fire hydrant
during Monday night's regular
session of the Norlina Board of
Commissioners.
About ten residents of an
unpaved street that snakes in
and out of the eastern limits of
town urged commissioners to
give attention to their request
for paving as a road which has
been a problem for b th
residents and board members
alike.
Obviously the outgrowth of a
farm trail, the narrow dirt road
is part inside, part outside the
town boundary. Compounding
the problem is the fact that the
road in places is just 14 feet
wide, a fact that Commissioner
Jimmy Overby contended
would bar Norlina from legally
proceeding with improvements.
Thomas Manson, a resident
of the area for 40 years, said he
was "tired of eating dust" and
said that dust stirred from
passing cars entered his house
and soiled clothes. He told
commissioners he "would ap
preciate anything you can do."
Just what Norlina can do
remained in question as
Monday night's meeting wore
on. Overby suggested that
commissioners tour the area
and Mayor Bill Perry authoriz
ed Town Clerk Mae Gums to
contact the town's engineering
firm to see if a proposal to cut a
new street into the area would
be feasible.
Also to be discussed with the
engineers are prospects for
installing a fire hydrant in the
area, which is now served by
nothing larger than a two-inch
line. In fact, commissioners
were told, several hydrants in
town are connected to two-inch
pipe, making their effective
ness questionable.
John Jenkins, Washington
Street resident, amplified the
call for a hydrant, saying that a
fire in the area would result in
the loss of homes.
In a related matter, Mildred
Mason of the Warren Plains
Road-Washington Street area
expressed a desire to have the
town connect her trailer to
water and sewer lines, a project
estimated to cost $275. She said
that HUD was willing to pay
her $90 monthly to help defray
living expenses, but that she
could only pay for the
connection in installments.
Commissioners later took no
action on the request, saying
that to act favorably would be
in violation of a town ordinance
which calls for advance
payment in full for utility
tap-ons.

Norlina Board Wants This Old Building Removed
Norlina Landmark
May Be Auctioned
A Norlina landmark which
has alternately been described
as an eyesore, a firetrap and a
rat infested health hazard could
find itself sitting on the auction
block in less than two months.
A two-story frame store
building and a smaller compan
ion structure owned by the late
Mrs. Mamie White stirred talk
of condemnation Monday night
during a meeting of Norlina
commissioners.
The building, built as a store
and last used as the Norlina
library before books were
taken into a remodelled train
car which now serves as the
town library, was described by
Mayor Bill Perry as a health
and fire hazard. Leigh Traylor,
speaking for the town fire
department, said that should
the building catch fire "there
would be nothing we could do.
As a matter of fact, there
wouldn't be anything two fire
companies could do."
The problem is accentuated
by the fact that Mrs. White,
who died several years ago, left
her property to charity, and a
trustee must be appointed to
handle the sale. Traylor has
been suggested as the logical
trustee, and Monday night
Board Attorney Jules Banzet
said the process to qualify
Traylor, advertise the property
and conduct the auction might '
be done in about 45 days,,
barring an upset bid.
The commissioners were
advised by their attorney not to
take condemnation proceed
ings, but to await the sale, since
it was probable that a new
owner would either raze the
building or restore it to meet
health and safety standards.
