Clubhouse Setting
For Women's Meet
The Woman's Club of
Norlina met at the Clubhouse
on May 4 with Mrs. L.
0. Robertson, president,
presiding. Mrs. Alta Davis
gave a devotion on Mother's
love to open the meeting.
Mrs. Eleanor Hayes,
conservation chairman, introduced
the program guest,
Gordon Green, a representative
of Carolina Power
and Light. He presented an
informative program on
energy use, waste and
conservation.
Mrs. Hyla Stultz gave the
history of the club which
began in Norlina in 1926.
Mrs. Robertson and Mrs.
Lou Traylor gave reports of
their attendance at the 75th
Annual Convention for the
North Carolina Federation
of Women's Clubs held in
Winston-Salem in April.
During the business session
the members were
reminded to continue to
save old newspapers for the
coming paper drive.
Mrs. L. C. Davis and Mrs.
William Brauer, hostesses,
served strawberry pie,
cheese straws, nuts and
coffee to the 14 present.
Mr. and Mrs. William Holt Fleming of Tifton, Ga.,
announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter,
Betty Ann, to Bob Mark Moon, son of Mrs. William Moon
and the late Rev. William Moon of Kodaikanal, India.
The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Claude J. Fleming of Warrenton and the late Mr. and
Mrs. Wallace Newman of Norlina.
The wedding will be held at the First United Methodist
Church in Tifton, Ga., on June 25 at 2:30 in the afternoon.
Miss Fleming is a senior at Asbury College in Wilmore,
Ky.
Mr. Moon was graduated from Asbury College and is
presently a ministerial student at Asbury Theological
Seminary in Wilmore, Ky.
All friends and relatives are invited to attend the
wedding.

Class Deborah H. Johnson,

completed recruit training
at the Marine Corps Recruit
Depot, Parris Island, S. C.
A graduate of Virginia
Commonwealth University,
Richmond, with both a
bachelors degree and a
masters degree, she joined
the Marine Corps in September
1971.
Norlina Juniors
Will Offer Stew
The Norlina Junior Woman'*
club will bold a brunswick
stew tale on Saturday,
May 21, at the Woman's
Clubhouse. The stew will
sell for |2.25 a quart and will
be available by 4 p. m. on
Saturday.
The proceeds will go into a
scholarship fund to be
awarded to a Norlina High
School Senior graduating
this year. Advance orders
can be called to any
member of the club or left
with Mrs. Ann Powell at the

Captain Brackin
Is In Exercise
Navy Captain John D.
Brackin, whose wife, Melissa,
is the daughter of
Viola Taylor of Norlina, is
participating in Exercise
"Solid Shield *77."
He is serving as an officer
assigned to Amphibious
Group Two, homebased in
Norfolk, Va. His unit is
embarked aboard the amphibious
command ship USS
Mount Whitney for Solid
Shield.
The two-week joint exercise
is being conducted in
the Atlantic coastal waters
off North Carolina and
Georgia and at nearby
military installations. More
than 40,000 men and women
from all branches of the
Armed Foices, including
3,000 Reservists, are
participating. Twenty-two
ships from the U. S. Second
Fleet, plus carrier and
land-based Navy and Marine
Corps air craft have
joined with units of the
Army's Forces Command, a
Marine Amphibious Brigade
and units from the Air
Forces Command, a Marine
Amphibious Brigade and
units from the Air Force's
Tactical Air Command and
Military Airlift Command
for "Solid Shield."
Hereford House
Setting For Meet
Members of the Music and
Literature Club of Norlina
held their final meeting of
the season last Thursday at
the Hereford House in
Henderson. Eighteen members
and husbands gathered
for the luncheon. Programs
will resume in the fall.

Palmer Is New Council Head

Monday, May I, marked
the beginning of the campaign
for Student Council
offices. Shaking hands,
putting up posters, and
drumming up votes were the
order of the day. Running
for offices were: President,
Robert Palmer; Vlce-Prt
dent, Derrick Cheston a. Carolyn
Jones; SecretaryPamela
Epps and Natalie
Roberts; and TreasurerTommle
Craft, Alton Fleming,
Mary Harrison and
Michael Vaughan.
On the beautiful sunny
Spring morning of May 11
candidates for office gave
spirited campaign speeches
before the student body on
the athletic field. All were
well received, but only one
can win. Thursday, May 12
was the day of reckoning.
Elections were held during
homeroom. After the dust
settled and the votes were
counted the winners were:
President-Robert Palmer,
Vice-President — Derrick
Cheston, Secretary-Pamela
Epps, and Treasurer-Mary
Harrison.
The blood mobile was
parked in front of the N.H.S.
gymtorium on Tuesday and
soon all the equipment was

Happenings

Two movies, Mario
Thomas, "Free to be...You
and Me," and "Fireball in
the Night," about black
history, were shown at
Warren Plaza Rest Home on
May 6. Popcorn and
Kool-aid were served.
On May 7 a bus load of
residents visited friends at
the Pleasant Hill Rest
Home. Movies were also
shown.
Two residents of the rest
home have recently died.
The Warren Plaza will miss
Mrs. Mamie Pinkett and
Mrs. Hester Almond.
Two of the residents are in
the hospital. Joe Jones is in
Warren General and Jake
Sawyer is in Duke Hospital.
We hope they are soon well
and can return to the Plaza.
Many of the residents
have been busy in the past
couple ' of weeks with
cleaning and beautification
of the grounds. A fence has
been reconstructed all
around the grounds and we
plan to start a vegetable
garden the first of the week.
Many residents are looking
forward to helping out with
the planting and tendingAll
the residents are
anticipating the fresh vegetables.
The management of Warren
Plaza has purchased
some new tools and we
plan to open a wood
workshop in the near future.
Several of the residents
have expressed their interest
in a hobby. Hopefully we
can make some things
worthy of sale.
No movies were scheduled
for Friday and Saturday.
Instead a lake trip and
picnic were held on May 14.

donate blood.
The Norlina Prom committee
has been busily
working on the 1976-77 prom
for the past week. The
theme "A Time Just For
Us" is being carried out in
the colors of green, yellow
and pink. Friday, May 20,
will definitely be a cherished
and unforgettable memory.
N.H.S. wishes to express
their sympathy to the Chestons
who were saddened by
the loss of Mr. Cheston's
father in Trenton.
The Norlina Blue Waves
softball team ended the
season by splitting a double
header with John Graham
on May 12. In the first game
Warrenton won with a close
7-6 score but Norlina was on
the top the second game
with a 5-2 victory.
