Skinner Attends Conference By TOM SKINNER North Central District 4-H Reporter This year I was selected to attend Junior Dairyman'* Conference in Raleigh. It was held June 15 to 17. Two delegates were selected to represent Warren County. The other delegate, Scott West, was selected to attend the State FFA Convention which was also in Raleigh on June 15-17, so that left only me. I arrived at 11 a. m. Wednesday, signed up and went to lunch. Before the day's activities began, we reviewed the conference schedule and everyone introduced themselves. Our first stop was the Central Carolina Farmers Co-op headquarters in Durham. We learned how a big farmer co-operative works. We then toured the feed plant and saw what went into making feed (rations, vitamins, supplements.) Everything is done by machine except the adding of trace minerals to the feed. We left CCF at 4 and arrived back in Raleigh. Everyone saw a movie about farmer co-operation entitled "Chaos or Co-operation." It was very interesting how the farmer co-ops got their start in the United States. Thursday morning was filled with a visit to the N. C. S. U. Campus. We learned about nutrition and how the dairy cow digests the food it eats from Drs. Ramsey, Rakes and Davenport. Thursday afternoon we toured the Randleigh Farm outside Raleigh. This farm was given to N. C. S. U. by a man in New York and is operated by a grant from his trust fund. There we learned how to judge good silage and the use of chemical analysis in feeding and how to get a balanced ration by using a computer. Waste problems were also discussed. Our speaker at the Thursday night banquet was James Walker. Mr. Walker is a representative of Dairyman, Inc., from Alabama. After a lot of color in his speech, we saw a movie on the research of the Extension Agencies across the country. On Friday, we returned to N. C. S. U. to the Food Science Department which we toured extensively. I don't see how those people working in the plant could stand all 32 of us in there at the same time. At 12 p. m., we wrapped up the conference and everyone left for home. All in all everyone had a great time, and I bet they wouldn't mind coming back again next year. Local Firemen Receive Certificates Three local firemen received certificates for completing 23-hour courses in firefighting at Wilson last week. Chief McCarroll Alston of the Warrenton Fire Department completed a 23-hour course in administration. Gene Medlin and Dennis Paschall of the Norlina Fire Department, completed courses in pump operation, maintenance and in flammable liquids, respectively. The courses were given under the auspices of the N. C. Insurance Commission for the purpose of instructing firemen in this area on proper techniques in fire-" fighting. Training sessions were held at a local high school in Wilson and at Wilson Technical Institute. Jaycees Hold Annual Picnic Warren County Jaycees held their annual family picnic over the weekend at the cottage of Monroe Gardner on Lake Gaston. A spokesman for the local Jaycee chapter said that approximately 40 people attended the affair. More Expensive Avoid foods that are packed as individual servings. The extra packaging usually boosts the price.
