Dismissed Trooper Worked Here
A state trooper who
formerly patrolled Warren
County highways has been
dismissed as the»result of an
Interstate 85 shootout in
which a Virginia trooper
was killed.
Robert P. Williams was
fired Friday because of his
role in a November ex
change of gunfire in
Granville County in which
Virginia State Trooper Gar
land W. Fisher, Jr., was
killed. Fisher had been
kidnapped and was being
driven south by Rueben
Connally, who has since
been convicted of the
trooper's slaying.
Williams, 28, of Durham
had worked Warren County
on occasion. He was at the
Granville County roadblock
and fired the first shot by
officers. He was dismissed
for violating patrol policy on
the use of weapons and the
use of force.
Patrol Commander John
T. Jenkins followed recom
mendations of a patrol trial
board in upholding the firing
of Williams. Williams has
said he would file an appeal
of the decision.
An informed source told
The Warren Record that
initially the roadblock had
been planned for the Ruin
Creek interchange in Vance
County because of its
proximity to Maria Parham
Hospital, but that the
decision was later made to
move the roadblock south to
the Butner exit in Granville
County.

before leaving the scene.
Both doors fell off the car as
it was pried loose by a

The trooper said the car
went out of control in a
curve and skidded 546 feet
before stopping. The vehicle
was registered to Pyree
Colley of Rt. 4, Louisburg,
he said.
Earlier Sunday, Bennett
investigated the collision of
two cars at an Elams
crossroads nine miles north
of Littleton. He said a car
driven by Dorothy Wilkins
Arrington, 47, of Rt. 1,
Littleton, backed into a
Volkswagen driven by Edna
Mae Faulkner of Chesa
peake, Va., as Ms. Arring
ton was attempting to
complete a U-turn. Ms.
Arrington was charged with
improper backing in the 6:42
p.m. collision that caused
$150 damage to the Virginia
car.
Earlier Sunday, Bennett
charged Sammy Reid Liles,
Rt. 2, Littleton resident,
with driving left of the
center line after Liles' car
veered off Road 1357 two
and a half miles north of
Littleton and struck a
culvert, causing damages to
the vehicle estimated at
$400. Bennett said the driver
pulled out of a ballpark
driveway and entered the
highway shortly before
losing control of his car. He
was travelling alone.
Trooper W. C. Palmer
reported Wednesday that at
least three people were
hospitalized and several
others treated for injuries
resulting from wrecks dur
ing the long holiday week
end.
Palmer reported that
Dennis W. Goode of Spartan
burg, S. C., was southbound
on 1-85 about 2:25 a. m. on
June 28 when a cow crossed
his path. Goode was
approaching a bridge em
bankment and could not
avoid the accident, accord
ing to Palmer. Approxi
mately $1100 in damages
resulted to the car. Four
occupants of the car were
not injured and no charges
were filed. The accident
occurred between the Oine
and Ridgeway exits on 1-85.
Fred L. Hanner, Jr., of
Bear Creek was westbound
on 158 bypass on July 1
about 7:50 a. m. when Gary
V. Williams of Macon pulled
out in front of him at the
Warren Plains Road cross
ing. According to Palmer,
Williams had stopped for the
stop sign and did not see the
approaching 1972 Mac trac
tor-trailer driven by Han
ner. The tractor-trailer
struck Williams at the
crossing causing $1,900 in
damages and hospitalizing
Williams.
Edward D. Hargrove was
westbound on Rural Paved
Road 1305 near Wise on July
2 when a tire blew out,
causing him to lose control
of his vehicle. According to
Palmer, Hargrove was
rounding a curve driving on
the yellow line when he met
another vehicle. As he
swerved back into his lane
of travel, the tire blew out.
He lost control and slid into
a pine tree. One of the
passengers in the vehicle
was hospitalized and Har
grove and another passen
ger were treated at the
hospital and released. Dam
ages estimated at $2,000
were set and Hargrove was
charged with exceeding safe
speed.
A pedestrian was struck
and hospitalized on July 4
near the Cokesbury com

Trooper Palmer reported
that the investigation is
continuing. The victim's
name was not released.
