John Graham Teacher Accepts New Position Jerry Willard, teacher of social studies and assistant coach at John Graham High School, has resigned and will return to the western part of the state. He has accepted a position at Newton. Six years ago he came to Warren County as teacher at North Warren and later joined the faculty at John Graham. Mr. and Mrs. Willard have two children, a son, Mark 5, and Jan, 14 months. Announcement of Mr. Willard's resignation was made at a meeting of the board of education on Monday night, when Supt. Peeler expressed regrets over his departure The board members elected the following: Sammie Jean Wilder, speech clinician and graduate at East Carolina University; Mrs. Diane B. Davis, Mariam Boyd; Gloria Allen, Mariam Boyd; Johnny 0. Williams, Vaughan; Waite Pitchford, electrician with the school maintenance department; and Debra Ferruccio, at Norlina and Audrey Davis at North Warren. Both are ESEA reading teachers. Supt. Peeler said that while the school system had lost two kindergarten teachers it had gained one, for a net loss of one. He said he expected that two kindergarten teachers would be allotted to South Warren and two to Northside. Supt. Peeler told the board that he had granted maternity leave to Mildred Townes. The matter of assistant principles was postponed from the June meeting and Monday night Peeler told the board members why he thought all assistant principals should teach. The board agreed and ordered that all assistant principals should be required to teach no more than two classes each school day. In a report on budget changes Supt. Peeler said that one-fourth of Mrs. Ed Harvey's pay should be paid by the county, as she works for both county and ESEA. He also announced a 6H% pay increase for all school personnel, and the payment for longevity running from m to 4%. Supt. Peeler told the board that because the state had increased its energy allottments and a few other items, the school was able to end the school year with a $60,000 surplus in the instructional department. The board agreed to employ David E. Scobie to work with Mrs. Edwards in setting up the new accounting system on a per hour basis. The cost was estimated at from $1200 to $1800. Supt, Peeler said that because the program was new it was difficult to estimate closer. Supt. Peeler read a letter from Mrs. Clyde Rodwell thanking the board for adopting a new softball program at John Graham. She said two games a week and no tournament games had proven bearable. The football season will open within two weeks and no further consideration of softball was discussed. The Board of Health will meet on Aug. 1 attended by representatives of the Board of Education and County Commissioners to elect a member of the ABC Board. Supt. Peeler wanted to know would the verbal notice be sufficient. Members said that it would be better to receive a written reminder. Joseph Richardson and Ralph Evans, students at Central Carolina University at Durham, attended the two hour meeting as observers. CORRECTION In last week's issue of The Warren Record, Reginald Harris was listed as host of the social hour at the appreciation banquet for Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Branche of Warrenton. That was incorrect, Tommie Patrick hosted the social hour and gave brief remarks on the activities of Imran Temple 168 of Henderson, of which Mr Branche is a past Potentate. State Conducting Creek Study Here I A series of studies is being conducted by the state this month to determine how fast oxygen is replenished by nature in Fishing Creek near Warrenton. The results of the studies will be used to establish levels of sewage treatment for discharges 'into those waters. Similar studies are being conducted on selected streams throughout the state. "We want to set levels of treatment high enough to assure that the rivers and streams are adequately protected from the effects of accumulated sewage discharges," said Robert Van Tilburg of the State Division of Environmental Management. He added, "At the same time, we must bear in mind the tremendous costs of constructing sewage treatment facilities. These studies will assure that the requirements we're placing on industry and municipalities are not unreasonable. We don't want consumers and citizens paying for treatment plants that are more sophisticated and costly than they need to be to get the job done." In a typical study, a tracer dose of red dye and two radioisotopes, krypton and tritium, is released underwater. Using highly sensitive equipment, technicians analyze downstream samples. The measurements indicate how rapidly oxygen re-enters the stream from the air. Use of the tracers is licensed by the N. C. Department of Human Resources under authority of the U. S. Nuclear Regula tory Commission. Tracer levels will be well within : safe limits established by i those agencies. The studies are being • conducted by an intensive survey group of the State Division of Environmental Management in cooperation with the Civil Engineering Department at North Carolina State University.
