Lorn fcarworm Building Up In Soybean Crop L.C.COOPER Extension Agent As predicted the com earworm is building up in soybeans in Warren County, L. C. Cooper, agricultural extension agent, reported this week. "According to reports from the Extension Entomologist Specialist, the moth flight :« two weeks earlier than sual," Cooper said. "This means that the early soybean varieties such as Essex, Forrest, York, Coker 136 (the group V) which usually escapes the corn earworms are being infested and will likely be reinfested." The drought stress has caused more open canopy fields, he reported, showing that the soybean plants have not covered the field or met and shaded out the row middles. Therefore a higher percentage of the fields than usual will be subject to economic damage. The flight of the corn earworm moths from corn is likely to persist over a longer period this year than in recent years, Cooper said. This also could result in the moth depositing the eggs on the plants as well as in the soil. The treatment threshold of the corn earworm is an average of two earworms 3/4 inch long per foot of row. To treat the 3/4 inch long or longer corn earworm requires every other day of field scouting. Corn earworms less than 3/4 inch long do insignificant injury when small, and treating earworms less than 3/4 inch long may not allow enough time for all eggs to hatch from that generation," Cooper said. However, due to the growing condition resulting from drought stress, two or more insecticide applications will be needed in some fields, the agent pointed out. Treat with 1.5 pints of Sevimol or one pint of Lannate per acre when corn earworm numbers exceed two worms per foot of row, he said. Attorney Wins National Office Warrenton attorney, Frank W. Ballance, Jr., was elected District Representative of the National Bar Association at its Annual Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana, on August 5. Attorney Ballance will represent Region 4, including North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Ballance, who attended the week-long convention accompanied by his wife, Bernadine, stated that the District Representative, in addition to being a member of the Board of Directors of the NBA, serves as a coordinator for attorneys living in this region and also is responsible for attracting new members to the Association, which has approximately 3,000 members. The National Bar Association is composed of Black and minority lawyers throughout the U. S. A. and primarily focuses on national and regional issues affecting Black and minority persons and particularly Black and minority lawyers.
