McGruder of Whitestone Va. Mrs. Fred Cheek and daughter, Bryan, of Kinston spent Monday night with her parents, Mr and Mrs William Boyce. Mr. and Mrs. John Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Williams, Mr and Mrs. Bruce Bell, Mrs. Alpheus Jones, Mrs. James Bullock and Hugh Holt have returned from the mountains where they were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Lee for several days. The Rev. and Mrs. William H Crouch, Jr., and daughters, Allison and Rebecca, are spending two weeks at the Crouch summer home at Lake Lure. Mrs. Howard Edwards and daughter, Laura Egerton, of Hickory, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Drake and son, Joseph, of Raleigh were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Tucker during the weekend. Miss Jan Gardner, accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Monroe Gardner, went to Raleigh on Thursday to enroll as a freshman at Meredith College. Mrs. Wiley Coleman is a patient in Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson. Miss Susan Gardner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Scott Gardner, has gone to Greensboro where she will be a sophomore at U.N.C.-G. Mr. and Mrs. James B Rothwell of Boston, Mass., were recent guests of Mr and Mrs. H. S. Andersen Mr. and Mrs. Howard Henry of New York are visiting Mr. and Mrs. W. R Drake in Macon. While here they spent a week at Atlantic Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Reams and Mr. and Mrs. Duke Miles attended a golf tournament at Boone last week. Mr. and Mrs. Reams also spent a few days in Spruce Pines. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Rodwell had as their guests for several days last week Mrs. J. F. Trotter, Sr., and Mrs. Sara Howard of Reidsville. Jones has returned to her home after spending two weeks with Dr and Mrs. Sydney Jones and daughter, Laurie, in Randolph, N. J., and Dr. and Mrs. Lon Jones and children in Scotia, N. Y. The Rev. and Mrs. John Link of Spring Hope were here on Sunday where he held services at the Baptist Church. Laura Lee Shearin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Willis Shearin. has returned from Noisy Le Croi, France, where she has been an exchange student for the past four weeks. C . was a recent luncheon guest Vaughan Baptist Church Has A New Pastor The Rev. Richard A. Green has accepted the pastorate of the Vaughan Baptist Church. The Rev. Mr. Green, his wife, Linda, and their children, Donna, 6 and Claudia, 4, are making their home in Wake Forest where he is a second year student at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and has been working parttime in the Pharmacy at Wake Forest. A native of Columbia, S. C , he is a graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy. The Rev. Mr. Green said he is "looking forward to our upcoming revival which will consist of four services, Aug. 28-30. The opening service will begin at 11 a. m. on Sunday, followed by dinner served in the churchyard. ••The Sunday night service will be especially for the youth of the church and community, beginning with a sermon by puppets at-7:30p. m., followed by the regular service at 8 o'clock. Monday's service has been designated as Family Night with light refreshments and fellowship at 9 p. m. after the 8 o'clock worship. Weldon, Jr., completed the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree on July 15 and received the degree August 19 from Heed University, Hollywood, Fla., affiliated with the University of Miami. His degree program provided him expertise in Research and Evaluation, Curriculum Development, Guidance and Counseling, Achievement Motivation, and Organization Development. Dr. Weldon is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Ira Weldon of the Epsom community between Henderson and Louisburg and is married to the former Elizabeth Cowles Spivey of Sunbury. He has a daughter, Alicia, and a son, John III, and has been a resident of Newport News, Va., since 1955. He is a member of the Warwick Peoples Reunion Held At Afton Elberon Clubhouse F our generations of children of Joe and Nellie Aycock Peoples held their family reunion at the AftonElberon Clubhouse on Sunday, August 21. Lunch of barbecue chicken, cole slaw, potato salad, brunswick stew and a variety of pies and cakes was enjoyed by the 63 members attending. Children of the couple present were Maude Lee Jones, Edward and Lewis peoples, Pearl Stone, Margie Mustian, Elizabeth Grimes and Delia Stegall. Another son, Joe K. Peoples of Columbus, Ga.y was unable to attend. The children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were from AftonElberon, Henderson, Kittrell, Raleigh, Middleburg, Clinton, Fayetteville and Virginia Beach, Va. The family members attending ranged in age from seven months to 76 years. Stew Sale The ladies of the Macon United Methodist Church will sponsor a brunswick stew sale on Saturday, August 27, at the church. The stew will be ready by noon. WELDON United Church of Christ in Newport News. He completed the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1350 from Elon College and the Masters Degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1955 with a major in Guidance and Personnel Work. Presently Dr. Weldon serves as an Education advisor at Headquarters, United States Training and Doctrine Command, Fort Monroe, Va. He works with ROTC Programs conducted in over 925 colleges or high schools within the United States, Puerto Rico and the Canal Zone. He also serves as Director of General Counseling Services in Newport News and is a licensed professional counselor. He has written many publications and has served as a high school teacher, a principal and a professor. First Wright Reunion Held Descendants of the late Robert Bruce Wright, known as "Man" Wright, met at the Carlton Clary cottage on Lake Gaston near Gasburg, Va., on Sunday, August 21, for their first family reunion. The reunion was coordinated by Mr..and Mrs. Samuel Clary of Gasburg, Va., and Mr. and Mrs. Grady Moseley of Warrenton. The lunch was spread on tables under the trees and thanks were returned by Calvin Edwards of Brodnax, Va. Grady Moseley of Warrenton, grandson of Robert Bruce Wright, acted as master of ceremonies. Miss Edith Moseley of Brodnax, Va., registered approximately 275 family members. Guests attended from Littleton, Ayden, Roanoke Rapids, Gaston, Halifax, Weldon, Vaughan, Conway, Eure, Morganton, Wilming, Birthday Party Roy E. Pierce was honored at a birthday picnic on Saturday, August 13 at the Pierce pond near Vaughan. The occasion was to celebrate his 71st birthday. Hosts were Mrs. Roy Pierce and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Pierce. Mr. Pierce received many useful and attractive gifts. Sharing the occasion with him was Debra Brown, who was observing her 11th birthday on the same day. Approximately 40 guests were present from Vaughan, Macon, Littleton, Roanoke Rapids, Warrenton, Raleigh and Milesburg, Pa. ton and Warrenton, North Carolina; and Gasburg, South Hill, Lawrenceville, Kenbridge, White Plains, Virginia Beach, Brodnax, Valentines, McLean, Lacrosse, Ebony, Baskerville, Blackstone, Hopewell, Emporia, Brookneal, Colonial Heights, Linville, Prince George, Dolphin and Triplet, Va. The late Jim Wright, son of "Man" Wright, had the highest number of children in attendance. Gifts were given to Mrs. Mary F. Wright of Roanoke Rapids for being the oldest; Eric Stamper of Brodnax, youngest; Paige Wright of Brodnax, door prize; Carl P. Wright of McLean, Va., travelling the furthest; Mrs. Mary P. Wright of Lacrosse, Va., for the most grandchildren and M. T. Floyd of Roanoke Rapids for the biggest feet. The group voted to make the reunion an annual gathering. Officers were elected for 1978 and included Paige Wright of Brodnax, president; Mrs. Margaret Baird of Valentines, Va., vice president; Miss Sandra Wall of Brodnax, secretary and Mrs. Hattie Ruth Jones of Ebony, Va., treasurer. Former Pastor Will Preach At Homecoming The Rev. Dennis Levin, pastor of Providence United Methodist Church, has announced that the Rev. Oliver Taylor, a former pastor, will preach at the homecoming service on Sunday, August 28 at 11 a. m. Taylor was pastor of the Warren Methodist Church comprised of Providence (Afton), Prospect (Embro) and Shocco (Vicksboro) from 1962 until 1966. The Rev. Mr. Taylor's sermon will be entitled "Paso Por Aqui" which is Spanish for "passed through here." The Rev. Oliver Taylor is a member of the Florida Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church and is pastor of the Miramar United Methodist Church. He and his wife, Laura, will be visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Melville Hicks while in the area. All friends and former members are cordially invited to attend the morning worship and a fellowship picnic lunch which will follow.
