An updated map showing relative densities of occupied deer range in North Carolina has recently been completed by Wildlife Resources Commission biologists and enforcement officers. "The distribution map should prove valuable to North Carolina deer hunters who are looking for new hunting areas," said a Commission spokesman. "The deer herd has expanded into new areas and increased in number since the last distribution density map was assembled several years ago. Deer hunters may want to begin scouting new hunting areas closer to their homes particularly in the Piedmont and Mountain regions. Recent restoration efforts have expanded deer range in these areas which should offer excellent hunting opportunities in a few years." "Biologically, the range density map tells us quite a bit about the state's deer population," he continued. "For example, practically the entire Coastal region has either a high or moderate deer population. If the deer herd is to remain healthy in these regions, we know that the deer kill has to be increased during coming hunting seasons. Already serious crop depredation is taking place in many of the high density areas and it is known that deer in high density areas are smaller, have smaller and poorly developed antlers, carry larger numbers of parasites of all types and are most susceptible to disease." Lewis To Attend Divinity School By RUTH MINCHER Mitchell (Mitch) Ingram Lewis, a member of the Baptist Youth Corps, was at Enterprise Baptist Church recently. Mitch has been serving as Youth Director for Enterprise for the summer months and has been working with the Rev. Jerry Harper, pastor. A graduate of Wake Forest College, Mitch will soon be beginning a three-year study for a master of divinity degree in Southeastern Baptist Seminary on the old Wake Forest campus. Mitch says that he has traveled over a good part of the United States visiting relatives and friends and just traveling. Last January he had an opportunity of a 30-day tour of Europe in connection with his studies. "We had a most interesting time," he said. "We saw many interesting people and places and had an audience with the Pope." The attractive young man said that he loves art and music (classical and other types), and last summer he was disc jockey for Radio Station WXIX and WRNC in Raleigh. He enjoys anything creative and loves to read. A native of St. Louis, Mo., he moved with his family to Raleigh in September of 1969 when his father was transferred to the Research Triangle. He attended Millbrook High School in Raleigh. He has one sister, Monica, who has just graduated from high school and will attend UNC-G this fall. He said that he has enjoyed working with the Rev. Mr. Harper. "He has been a good supervisor and has been very good to work with." He expresses his appreciation for the many kindnesses shown him, especially by Mrs. W. B. Stansbury in whose home he has stayed. Lots of his friends have asked him to come back and so he says with a smile, "I promise I will come back to visit."
