Fusible Interfacing Saves Time Fusible interfacings, one of the newer products available to home seamstresses, can be a convenience and a timesaver. They can be used very effectively with some fabrics, but are inappropriate for others, says Judy Walker, agricultural extension clothing specialist at North Carolina State University. The best test for determining whether a fusible is appropriate for a specific fabric is to actually fuse a swatch of the interfacing to a scrap of the fabric. Then take a close look at at the right side of the fabric, recommends Miss Walker. Has the fusible changed the appearance of the fabric in any way? Has it changed the hand or texture in any way so that it has become stiffer or "boardy?" Is a ridge visible on the right side of the fabric at the cut edge of the fusible? If the fusible interfacing has not changed the appearance, texture or hand of the fabric, it can be used effectively. Fabrics which sometimes show these changes include those that are solid color, light in color, lightweight or those having little surface texture.
