C., and Miss Debbie Kegel visited Mrs. D. R. Moore several days recently. The couple was en route to Wake Forest University where they are seniors. Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Hicks spent several days recently at Emerald Isle. The Rev. and Mrs. J. R. Hebel were in Durham Saturday to attend the Russell-Mayfield wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Goodbar of Durham were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Norwood. Mrs. Mary Stanley and daughter, Barbara, of Lawrenceville, Va., were weekend guests of Mrs. W. A. Delbridge Mr. and Mrs. Donald S. Wimbrow and Mr. and Mrs. John Dore are home after vacationing in New York City. Moore visited her daughter, Mrs. H. E. Davis, of Raleigh over the weekend. The Rev. and Mrs. Elton Cooke visited Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cooke in Colonial Beach, Va., over the weekend. Group Meets With Mrs. Overby The Olga Hood Group of the Norlina Baptist Church met in the home of Mrs. Martha Overby Monday at 8 P m Mrs. Harriet Faulkner had the program entitled, "New Sight-New Life-New Community," taken from the Book of John. Mrs. Shirley Weaver invited the members to join her in her home for the next meeting. Mrs. Overby served banana split cake to the nine members attending the meeting. The Norlina Baptist Church Mission Action Group held their August meeting in the home of Mrs. D. R. Moore Monday afternoon. There were eight members present with Mrs. Howard Stultz, chairman, giving the devotions. The opening prayer was led by Mrs. Moore. The circle voted to have a plaque placed on the TEL Class door, in memory of a former class member, Mrs. Agnes Bowers. Mrs. Nita Fuller was elected to secure the plaque. Officers for 1977-78 were elected. All were re-elected with the exception of the new program chairman, Mrs. Julia Wheeler and her assistant, Mrs. Emily Bobbitt. Mrs. Myrtle Fleming invited the group to meet in her home in September. After the business portion of the meeting, Mrs. Emily Bobbitt presented as her topic "How to Talk in Other Languages" and also offered the Calendar Prayers for the day. Meets The W.M.U. of Wise Baptist Church met in the home of Miss Emma Dunn on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p. m. Edith Comer and Mrs. Rena Myrick were hostesses. The program on Spanishspeaking Americans was given by Mrs. Leete. Ten members were present. MRS. JOHN ALLEN MAYFIELD Miss Russell Bride Of John A. Mavfield The wedding of Miss Myrtle Lee Russell of Durham and John Allen Mayfield of Raleigh took place Saturday, August 27, at 4 p. m. at Grey Stone Baptist Church in Durham. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Russell of Rt. 1, Saluda, and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Boyd Mayfield of Rt. 1, Norlina. The ceremony was conducted by the Rev. William Brogden of Durham and Dr. Robert M. Kimball, uncle of the groom, of WinstonSalem. Methodist Women Meet At Church The United Methodist Women held their General Meeting August 29 at the Noriina United Methodist Church. After a covered-dish supper, Mrs. Leigh Traylor presided over the meeting. Mrs. Clint Hege read the devotions and led the group in prayer. The guest speaker was Russell Roebuck, Business Manager, Choir Director and organist of First Presbyterian Church in Wilson. Mr. Roebuck displayed many of his needlepoint works which included subjects ranging from "Peanuts" characters to the more serious church and religious symbols. More than 40 members and guests were held in awe as this talented and very sincere man shared his crafts. Circle Meets With Mrs. Weaver The Annie Armstrong Circle of the Noriina Baptist Church met with Mrs. Ira Weaver on Monday night. The meeting was opened by the president, Mrs. Bee Sexter. Ann Mulchi and Mrs. William Brauer presented the program. Mrs. Nellie Mulchi will have the circle in her home for the September meeting. Mrs. Weaver served ice cream and cake to the 13 members present. Homemakers Meet For Dish Supper The Drewry Homemakers Club met on August 24 for a covered dish dinner at the home of Mrs. Jackie Young. The eight members and four visitors enjoyed the delicious food and recreation. MYF Will Meet The Zion MYF will meet at the church Sunday at 7 p. m. A reception was held in the church parlor following the wedding. Following a wedding trip the couple will make their home in Durham. Women Meet With Mrs. Burnette The United Methodist Women of Drewry Methodist Church met at the home of Mrs. Janice Burnette on August 25 at 8 p. m. Mrs. Molly Paschall opened the meeting. Mrs. Louise Ranes had the prayer and program. Mrs. Elaine Mitchell and Mrs. Becky Paschall gave a skit on United Methodist Women and Mrs. Ranes read a poem. Refreshments were served to the eight members attending. Shawnee Indians occupied a village near what is now Bellefontaine, Ohio, and they called it Blue Jackets Town. Miss Flora Burton Weds J. C. Pegues Miss Flora Burton and John C. Pegues, Jr., were united in marriage on Saturday, August 27, at four o'clock at the Warrenton Baptist Church. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs George Burton, Jr., of Warrenton Mr. Pegues is the son of Mrs. Mellowese Pegues and the late John C. Pegues of Alexandria, Va. Prior to the ceremony a program of nuptial music was presented by Mrs. WiUistine Williams, organist, of Warrenton and Miss Pearlie Harris, soloist, of Tarboro. The candlelight, doublering ceremony was performed by the Rev. Rufus Pegues, uncle of the groom. The couple exchanged vows before an altar flanked by palms and candlelabra. The bride, escorted to the altar by her father and given in marriage by her parents, wore a formal wedding gown of white poly-organza trimmed with venise lace featuring a high collar, square neckline, lace sleeves, A-line skirt with a chapel-length veil. She carried a bouquet of pink, green and white carnations and Mrs. Palmer Finds Snake In Closet Mrs. Russell Palmer of Norlina found an unwelcomed house pet in her closet last week. While retrieving a pair of shoes, Mrs. Palmer saw a small snake, later identified as a moccasin, in the corner. ' The woman called for help from the Norlina Police Department" and James Champion responded. He exterminated the snake which was about eight inches long. Champion nor Mrs. Palmer can determine how the snake got in the closet. Ridgeway Firemen To Sponsor Hunt The Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a "Dove Hunt" for three consecutive Saturdays, September 3, 10 and 17 at the Walter Bender farm, two miles west of Ridgeway on Highway 1. Ridgeway firemen will be posted on the property to sell tickets for the days hunting for $3.00. All proceeds will be used for the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department. Emergency Number The Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department announces that the number to call for emergency fire fighting service in the Ridgeway area is 456-3882. pink roses. Their gowns were identical to that of the honor attendant in pastel pink. Flower girl was Miss Jackie Mayfield, cousin of the bride. Charles Burton, Jr., nephew of the bride, was ringbearer. Michael Casey of Alexandria, Va., was best man. Groomsmen were Charles and David Burton, brothers of the bride, Roger Pegues, brother of the groom, Harold Robinson, Tony McGlocklyn and William Jones, all of Alexandria, Va. Ushers were Michael Burton, brother of the bride and Gregory Webb, cousin of the groom. Mrs. Georgia Exum of Warrenton directed the wedding. Reception Immediately following the ceremony a reception was given by the bride's parents at the Masonic Lodge in Henderson. Miss Dicie Puryear presided at the guest registry. Mrs. Peggy Tally of Raleigh greeted guests. Mrs. Gracie Burton of Warrenton served the wedding cake which was decorated with pink carnations and greenery. Mrs. Ella Cook of Warrenton catered the reception.. Shower On August 20, Miss Burton was entertained at a miscellaneous shower by her sister and friend, Mary Burton and Claudia Woods, in the home of her parents. Rehearsal Dinner The bridal party was entertained and served dinner at the Community Center in Warrenton by the parents of the bride on August 26.
