Teachers Use Workshops To Prepare For Year Warren County school teachers have been preparing for the year with extensive workshops and meetings since beginning their year on August 18. Programs were scheduled for elementary, high school and vocational teachers. Elementary Mariam Boyd, Northside, South Warren and Vaughan educators participated in a five-day staff development program. Workshops were scheduled for early childhood teachers (K-3) and intermediate teachers (4-6). Areas of concentration included music, metrics, media, dental care, physical education, hearing impairments, comprehensive skills, reading or math skills management and special services planning. Consultants were from the Department of Public instruction, colleges and other school systems. Warren County teachers who participated in reading and math workshops during the summer shared experiences, ideas, and techniques. High School The staff development program included a 20-hour session of sex bias. Sixteen teachers from Norlina and John Graham High Schools participated. The course was an offspring of a project called New Pioneers, which aimed at eliminating sex stereotyping in public education, specifically, vocational education. The course itself used group discussions and debates to examine some common classroom situations that have potential for bias and to help teachers spot their own sex biases. There was no attempt to give "the specific solution" to solve the problems of sex bias. Rather, the sharing of ideas, experiences, and suggested remedies by participants served to make all aware of the need to improve and change previous behavioral patterns for a better classroom. On Thursday, August 25, an added attraction was the visit of Gary Rideout, consultant from the Department of Public Instruction, who conducted the morning activities. He discussed "How Sex Bias Hurts Men" and showed the film, "We Are Women." Another workshop elected by some of the high school teachers was "Energy, Economics and Environment," sponsored by Carolina Power and Light Company. The program was presented by Miss Annette Rountree, an educational consultant for Carolina Power and Light Co. Also presented during the week at John Graham Library was a workshop entitled, "Turning On." This workshop, conducted by Bobby Pettis of East Carolina University, dealt with teacher-student relationships. Vocational Warren County vocational teachers attended three locally sponsored workshops in addition to a four-day statewide vocational conference in Greensboro. The local workshops included a reading workshop, sewing machine re pair and material dissemination session. The reading workshop was conducted by Mrs. Mary Johnson, a reading specialist from Duke University. The primary objectives were to gain new insights into teaching reading to high school students in conjunction with vocational classes and to develop a basis for coordinating the vocational reading efforts with the new reading program recently added to the high school curriculum of Warren County. The second workshop, sponsored by the Singer Sewing Machine Company, for home economics teachers, was conducted by Boyd K. Hawes, field manager of Education Services, United States Sewing Products Division. The third workshop was conducted by the State Department of Public Instruction, Division of Vocational Education, under the direction of Carl Whitehurst, Area Director of Vocational Education. The primary objectives of this workshop were to disseminate and explain various new teaching materials available in the new area media center, to familiarize the teachers with state and federal legislation pertaining to vocational education, and to clarify the new scope and sequence system of vocational education. The Granville County vocational teachers attended this third workshop as guests of Warren County vocational teachers. During workshop at Hawkins Junior High School Sarah Simms, Arnetra Johnson, Mary Sexton, instructor from Department of Public Instruction, Georgia Exum, Barbara Jones, and Loree Strickland discuss language art aids. Language Art Aids Discussed At Hawkins Jr. High Workshops The faculty of Hawkins Jr. High School held workshops at the school. The language arts-social studies sessions were conducted by Loretta Griffin, Planning Specialist from the State Department of Public Instruction; Lynee Stovall, Direction Specialist from Region 3; Mary Sexton and Cliff Collins from the SDPI. The Mathematics-Science sessions were under the direction of John Dunn, math consultant, and David Mallette, science consultant, both from the SDPI. Workshops Used To Strenghten Teaching Last year's Self-Study Report identified several areas of the school's curriculum that teachers felt needed to be strengthened. To accomplish this end, in-service workshops were planned in these areas of deficiency. Overall, teachers and aides have participated in over twenty hours of in-service workshops during the week of August 22-29th. Teachers and aides participated jointly in workshops on "Hearing," conducted by Mildred Blackburn, State Department of Public Instruction; "Developing Individual Educational Programs for Exceptional Children," conducted by Loretta Griffin, State Department of Public Instruction; and "ESEA Title I, Reading," conducted by James Jordan, Director of ESEA for Warren County. Later in the week teachers 4 through 6 and teachers 7 and 8 met separately for additional workshops. Four through six teachers and aides participated in in-service workshops in "Reading and Math Management" with Shirley White; "Physical Education" with Monte Allen; "Music" with Ron Walker, and "Math" with Evelyn Jenkins. The seventh and eighth grade teachers at North Warren participated in a Curriculum Development Workshop. Working in subject-area groups, they outlined the course of study for the year. Priorities were selected in all subject areas and activities for skill reinforcement were developed. The North Warren Middle School Self-Study Report, Math and Language Arts continuums, and suggestions from the State department of Public Instruction were used in these workshops. In previous years teachers and aides from North Warren Middle School have participated in county-wide workshops which were held in conjunction with other elementary and junior High schools in the county. This year, however, teachers elected to hold workshops apart from the other schools in the county so that the individual and unique needs of the school could best be addressed.
