Coach Bill Frazier of John
Graham's Yellow Jackets
was very optimistic with the
performance of his team
during a scrimmage game
against 3-A Ahoskie last
Thursday night.
Though no score is
maintained in a scrimmage
game, both schools got the
ball past the goal line twice.
Coach Frazier said his
ball club profited by the
game and that his offense
looked reliable. His defense
needed work, the coach
noted.
The defense will have a
chance to do better for the
coach on Friday night as the
Yellow Jackets battle South
Granville on the home field
at 8 p. m.
South Granville has been
working to improve an inexperienced
defense with
Arnold Wyrick, a junior
tackle, the only man on
defense returning from last
year Wyrick, at 5-11, 185
pounds, is one of the largest
men on the squad.
Coach Thomas R. Merritt
for the Vikings said that Ray
Faulkner and Dale Williams
are in the quarterback
position but Faulkner is
expected to start against
John Graham. He played
second-string to all-state
quarterback Ricky Brummitt
last year. (Brummitt is
now first-string punter for
Duke).
Charlie Lancaster and
David Fowler, ends, are
expected to be an aid to the
Viking offense this year.
The South Granville team
has only two seniors in the
starting lineup.

Statewide Black Caucus
Is Scheduled In Raleigh
A statewide meeting of the
North Carolina Black Women's
Political Caucus is
planned for September 17 at
St. Augustine's College in
Raleigh.
The purpose of the
meeting is to provide a
support system for black
women in North Carolina
that will enable them to
express and identify their
needs and to propose
strategies that will, through
the utilization of the political
system, allow them to
realize their full potential, a
spokesman said
The caucus is an outgrowth
of the North Carolina
International Women's
Year State meeting which
was held in June of this
year. The September 17
meeting is expected to draw
upon the support of minority
women 16 years and older,
in every walk of life from
every congressional district
in the state.
Every minority woman
who has deep concerns for
the growth and development
of her full potential is
asked to participate in the
conference. Workshops will
be held on church, education,
consumerism, credit,
law and criminal justice,
employment, electoral politics
and health care.
To register for the conference,
a woman need only
write on a plain sneet oi
paper, her name, address
congressional district and
the workshop she wants to
Warrenton Airman
Given Promotion
The son of a Warrenton
couple has achieved the
rank of first lieutenant in the
U.S. Air Force.
Lt. Joseph B. King, whose
parents are Mr. and Mrs.
Joe H. King of Rt. 3,
Warrenton, is a deputy
missile combat crew commander
at Minot AFB, N.
D., and serves with a unit of
the Strategic Air Command.
The lieutenant, a 1965
graduate of John Graham
High School, received his
B.S. degree in 1975 from
William Carey College,
Hattiesburg. Miss., and was
commissioned later that
year through Officer Training
School, Lackland AFB,
Tex.
His wife, Cheryl, is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Roy G. Daniel of Raleigh.

Practice Scheduled
Football practice at Hawkins
Junior High School will
begin Sept. 6 at 3:45 on the
school athletic field, Coach
John Coleman announced
this week.
All interested players
should go by the school
office and pick up health
blanks and all physical
examinations should be
done before Sept. 6. Shorts,
shoes, and T-shirts are
needed for the first practice.
