REACHING—Warrenton's prospective pass receiver, Greg Stiff (87) watches in
disappointment as a pass that was intended for him is broken-up by South Granville's
Dale Williams during Friday night's game. The Yellow Jackets suffered a 28-14 loss to
the Vikings after locking the score at 14-all at halftime. (Staff Photo by Don Stith)

a winning team
seemed a long way off.
Victory came sooner than
the team or coach expected,
taking the form of a 28-14
win over John Graham here
Friday night. It was opening
game for both squads.
The thorn in the side of the
I Yellow Jackets was Larry
Holding, a 5-9 runningback
with the power of a bull, if
you ask any of several
Warrenton Defensivemen.
Holding ripped his way
through the Jackets front
line and secondary for three
touchdowns. Another was
called back in the first half
because of a holding
penalty. The Viking's option
plays caught the Yellow
Jackets sleeping in the
opening quarters but as the
game progressed the option
didn't work as well as South
Granville would have liked.
John Graham staged a
remarkable pre-halftime
comeback, knotting the
scores at 14-all. Victor
Harrison, John Graham's
only athlete to letter in four
sports last season with 4.6
speed in the 40 yard dash,
used his exceptional speed
on an end-around play to get
Warrenton on the scoreboard
with a 75-yard touchdown
run. The extra point
kick by Darryl Lyles was
blocked.
As halftime drew near.
South Granville punted to
Brownja Alston, who was
standing on the Warrenton
30 yard line. Alston eluded
all Viking defenders and
scampered down field on a
70-yard touchdown sprint. A
conversion run and pass by
the Yellow Jackets was
good.
According to Yellow Jacket
head coach Bill Frazier,
Warrenton dominated all
kick-off and punting situations.
He admitted that his
defensive inconsistency
played a major part in
Warrenton's loss. Offensively,
Frazier feels like his
squad did a fair job.
The Warrenton backs
averaged 6.2 yards per
carry. Harrison excelled in
this category, racing for 163
yards on four carries.
Penalties took their toll
against Warrenton, 115
yards in comparison to
South Granville's 50. An
off-side infraction against
the Yellow Jackets setup the
Vikings third touchdown.
Friday night the Yellow
Jackets journey to Enfield
to play the Cougars, who are
sure to have fresh memories
of their recent 28-14 win ovei
North Pitt, a 3-A school.
Spirits are expected to be
high at Enfield, where an 8
p. m. kickoff is scheduled.

Field Goal
Proves Fatal
For Warriors
A last quarter 24-yard
field goal by Wake Academy's
David Chambers put
the Raleigh ballclub ahead
of Warren Academy 10-8 for
a win over the Warriors here
Friday afternoon at the Cow
Palace.
Wake got on the scoreboard
in the opening quarter
with a 16-yard touchdown
run by Glenn Carr, who also
led Wake in rushing with 62
yards. The extra point kick
by Chambers was good.
Warren Academy struck
back in the third quarter
with a two-yard touchdown
run by Victor Coleman following
a fumble recovery
deep in Wake territory.
Hinton Lee Alston hit
paydirt on a halfback
reverse for the two-point
conversion.
Defensively, the Warriors
played a good ballgame.
Their defensive front line
was consistant in making
the big play on third down
situations. Jerry Brown and
Tim Capps stopped two
threatening touchdown runs
with unassisted tackles near
the endzone.
Coleman led Warren
Academy in rushing with 45
yards and hauled in the
game's only interception.
Hinton Lee Austin was the
defensive leader, making
nine unassisted tackles.
Coleman gathered seven
unassisted tackles for the
evening.
Friday afternoon the
Warriors will host Wilson
Academy, at 4 p. m.
Victor Coleman, Warren Academy's leading ground gainer, is stopped for short yardage on this play.
Waves Find Defeat On Road
By DON STITH
The Norlina Blue Waves,
after opening season play
with an impressive 28-0 win
over Northwest, got a taste
of defeat Thursday night as
the Red Devils of Graham
High School handed them a
48-14 loss. On the Red
Devils' opening night. The
game was played at
Graham.
It was midway the second
quarter before the Blue
Waves could hit paydirt on
one and two yard runs by
Clifton "Pancho" Green.
Both conversion attempts
were stopped by the Red
Devils who had gained an
early 20-12 lead. First half
scoring ended with a
spectacular catch by the
Red Devils' tight end with
one second remaining on the
clock. This gave Graham a
Dale Brown (61) and an unidentified teammate
sandwich a Wake Christian pass receiver during Friday
afternoon's game.

David Rowlette, the Blue
Waves leading ground gainer
with 68 yards on 15
carries, was winded twice
during the third quarter and
had to be sidelined momentarily.
The running duties
were shifted to Green who
gathered 30 yards on 11
rushes.
The Red Devils scored
once more in the third
period and twice in the
fourth. The Conversion
attempt in the third period
was stopped by Norlina but
the Red Devils second team
quarterback found his target
twice on fourth quarter
touchdowns.
The only bright spot for
the Waves in the second half
came when the defensive
front line sacked the
quarterback in the endzone
for a two-point safety.
Johnny Fleming, Norlina's
quarterback, was
sacked five times for a loss
of 50 yards. He connected on
five of 17 aerial attempts for
48 yards. Rowlette hauled in
two passes for 14 yards,
Allen Hargrove grabbed one
for 14 yards and Darnell
Champ caught two for 16
yards.
On the ground, Norlina
was outrushed by the Red
Devils, 135 yards to 108
Their passing also surpassed
the Blue Waves. 86 yards
to 48.
Rowlette led the Waves
defensive attack <11 tackles),
assisted by Charlie
Bullock's six tackles Mar
vin Jones was also instrumental
in the Waves
defensive surge that fell far
short of victory.

WALTZING—Darnell Champ (22) and an unidentified Graham lineman seem to be
waltzing as Blue Waves runner David Rowlette (44) looks for daylight on one of his 15
rushes. Champ was beaten out on this play by the host lineman.
Although he la mostly hidden la the photo above, Norilna's Charlie Bullock gets a
hand on Graham quarterback Sid Stanfteld, canting him to miu target on thia third
quarter passing attempt. Headed forward to give Bullock help la Marvin Jonet (CI).
