statistics this week as

High temperature -96-on
August 1.
Lowest temperature -58on
August 19, 20, and 26.
Rainfall-5.% inches.
Thunderstorms - reported
on 16 days.
Most rainfall at one
time-1.59 inch on August 2.
Mr. Skillman said that
August was not an unusual
month as far as weather. All
of readings were made in
the Areola community at 8
a. m. each day.
Skillman also noted that
half of the month's rainfall
was in the first of the month.

Mr. and Mrs. Terry
Andrew Pike of Tarboro
announce the birth of a son,
Gregory, on August 28 in a
Tarboro hospital. Mrs. Pike
is the former Judy Ann

Drive Start Announced

VAUGHAN-Mrs. Gene
Pierce, chairperson for the
Vaughan-Macon Cystic Fibrosis
"Kiss Your Baby"
Campaign, announced this
week that the campaign will
be conducted through September
14. Every mother of
a youngster is requested to
kiss her baby with special
attention to the taste of the
skin.
A major sign of cystic
fibrosis is a high salt content
in the perspiration.
The local chairperson
emphasized that the twofold
campaign is designed to
alert parents to the symptoms
of CF and other
lung-damaging diseases of
children and to collect funds
in support of medical-scientific
programs at the 116
care, teaching and research
centers in the United States.
Many of the 150,000 North
Carolina youngsters who
suffer with one or more
lunch diseases are treated
at the Duke CF Center
which is supported by
campaign funds.
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
sponsors research,
education, teaching and
patient care at more than
100 CF Centers in the United
States.
Hometown Boy Returns
Eastern Halifax Gets Lawyer

LITTLETON-A Halifax
County native has returned
to his home county to
practice law.
Gilbert W. Chichester, son
of Mrs. Alma Chichester
and the late Wilson Chichester,
will have an office in
Littleton and a part-time
office in Hollister.
Chichester is a 1965
graduate of Aurelian
Springs High School and
served in the United States
Air Force from 1965 until
1968, including one tour of
Viet Nam.
He attended Halifax County
Technical Institute (now
Halifax Community College)
in preparation for colJenkins
Elected
Church Director
Jesse James Jenkins, son
of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Bynum Jenkins of the
Gruver Memorial Community
in Warren County, has
been elected to be Sunday
School and Bible Study
Director for the Littleton
Baptist Church beginning
October 1.
Mr. Jenkins grew up in the
Littleton area and moved
back to Littleton about a
year ago. He lives in the
home formerly owned by
Miss Carrie Helen and Miss
Elizabeth Moore on Moseby
Avenue.
Jenkins was very active in
churches in Wilmington. He
succeeds James Kearney,
Jr., who has been serving in
this office. His wife, the
former Annie Marie Williams,
is from the Swanquarter
area. They have two
sons, James Steven of
Wilmington, and Donald
Wayne, who is a lieutenant
in the Marines serving in
Okinawa.

Chapel Hill Baptist
Church Give Grants
The Chapel Hill Baptist
Church in the Oine community
awarded five $50 scholarships
on August 21. The
scholarships went to James
Russell, Joan Hendrick,
Lillie Mae Branch, Yvonne
Branch and Deborah Davis.
The funds were raised
through the efforts of the
scholarship fund committee
and other members. Officers

Mrs. Mamie G. (Floyd)
Walker of Littleton recently
vacationed in Chicago, 111.,
with her daughter, Valorie,
and son-in-law, Atty.
Michael J. Guthrie.
While in Chicago, Mrs.
Walker toured several of the
city's interesting neighborhoods
including Chinatown,
New Town and Rush Street.
She also visited Muhammed
Ali's mansion, the Sears
Tower, the architecturally
significant South Shore
Country Club, the Zoological
Gardens and several of the
city's museums. She also
toured the lakefront skyline
by yacht.
During her vacation, Mrs.
Walker visited relatives and
friends in Cincinnati, Ohio;
Gary, Indiana and Durham.
