Cowboys Sang Troubles
Away On Chisholm Trail
Old-time cowboys claim
there were so many stanzas
added to the song, "The Old
Chisholm Trail," that -end
to end-they'd stretch farther
than the trail itself.
That is a slight exaggeration,
but the song itself was
indeed the most popular of
all the cowboy ballads, the
one sung most often by the
cow-pokes themselves.
It was generally rendered
lustily as the singers rocked
to the motion of their horses
at the pace set by the herd.
As each man pealed out a
couplet, remembered from
some other time or composed
on the spot, the others
would join in the chorus.

"The Old Chisbolm Trail"
is one of 17 songs collected
on the National Geographic
Society record album,
"Cowboy Songs." The set is
the first of four in the
American Adventure series
to be released this year.
Others are "Song of Rebels
and Redcoats," "Steamboat's
A-Comin'," and
"Songs of the Civil War."
In his notes to the cowboy
rfecord, James A. Cox
explains that the cowboy
sang to soothe cattle to
sleep, to entertain around a
campfire, or to. while away
the lonely hours on night
watch or riding the line.
"Some trail bosses were
reluctant to hire men who
couldn't, or wouldn't, sing or
whistle," Mr. Cox writes.
"They knew from experience
that the puncher who
could keep a song going,
especially on dark, stormy
nights, did as much to raise
the spirits of the other cowhands
as he did to still the
fears of the skittish longhorns.
"The men on a drive often
referred to the singingest
cowboy as 'the bellwether'
and looked to him to lead the
way in keeping the herd
under control."
Cowboy Calms Cattle
In "Night-Herding Song,"
the cowboy sings to the
restless cattle: "My horse is
leg-weary and I'm awful
tired, But if you get lost
them I'm sure to get fired."
As for "The Streets of
Laredo," Mr. Cox points out
that it originated a long way
from Texas. An early
version was sung in England.
where it was known as
"The Dying Girl's Lament"
or "As I walked by St.
James Hospital," and the
melody was taken from an
even older Irish air.

All aboard for kindergarten!
That has been the
theme of Warren Academy's
kindergarten these
first three weeks of school.
Fifteen (8 girls, 7 boys)
happy, eager students hopped
on the kindergarten
train and chugged off into

The train has already
made many stops along the
way such as at Color Town,
Numberland, and the Music

On Thursday, Sept. 22, the
class enjoyed a real train
ride! The tots visited the
Warrenton Depot. While
there, Mr. Howard Oakley,
engineer, was kind enough
to take them for a short ride
on the pretty red, white, and
blue locomotive, No. 7. What
fun for all!
Everyone had a grand
time and enjoyed blowing
the train's whistle and
pulling the bell. Many
thanks to Mr. Oakley for
giving the Kindergarten
class such a special trip. It
was a treat to visit
Warrenton's historical rail
road.
Also, many thanks to Don
Stith for taking our picture.
We wish him success in his
study of fire technology.
Chug, chug, toot, toot, off
we go!
